    I worked at David Aplin Group full-time

    Pros

    At one time there was the "home/work" balance, but that was slowly changing when I was released. They let you run your desk the way you want to run your desk as if it is your own business, its about making the numbers which makes sense. Flexibility in regards to attending to family at home, option to work from home was a perk for employees with children. When the economy is good, and your billing,life is good here, when the economy took a turn, things changed, you learned your value quickly.

    Cons

    Lots of staff turnover in leadership and consultants, revolving door of poor hires lots of change in consultants during the seven years nationally. Weak leadership for branches, challenge to find someone to manage the branch took over a year to secure someone, numerous managers during my time.

    Technology, computers needs to be updated more than ten years old, screens were old, nothing seems to be updated with the times.

    Don't spend extensive money on marketing the organization was a long term employee, when the economy took a downturn there was no support in assisting to make a decent living and over exceed the draws. Continually takes earnings away from consultants with their new major accounts initiative which was started at the beginning of the year.

    Advice to Management

    Re-evaluate the leadership team, your teams are only as good as their leaders. Get all the information before making decisions, you may not always have the correct facts. Communication on the direction of the company needs to be clearer.

    Pros

    Thrown right into the fire and need to build up a book of business quickly. You learn a lot in a short amount of time and should look at this as a launching pad for your career.

    Cons

    West Coast HQ dictates KPIs and quotas across company which are unrealistic for verticals and territory for rest of Canada. Place a ton of value on previous extensive Sales experience (from other industries) but these people come in and crash & burn.

    Advice to Management

    Be transparent and place more value on your intermediate up and coming recruiters. Embrace their skills and help them develop their careers, instead of pushing them out the door to put money in a competitors pocket (who sees more value in them). Recruiting is just as important as Sales in any deal, one does not outweigh another. A Sales person doesn't equal a rockstar recruiter off the hop. BD is not more important than building a pipeline of candidates.

    Pros

    Having worked at Aplin for nearly a decade, I can truly attest to the strong collaborative company culture and the internal support for career growth and development. So much opportunity to make an everlasting impact. The recruitment team focuses on extending that positive impact among their peers, with their clients and with job seekers.

    Cons

    High stress industry, lean corporate team.

    Cons

    I was acquired by Aplin during a merger and it became very clear they only wanted us for our contacts. The entire company was let go with very little severance.
    Before that they were hiring internally but they refused to train the experienced recruiters in a new discipline and instead fired them all.
    I had zero access to my Manager. She would not return calls or emails.
    Another Manager demanded to speak with the doctor directly when an employee had surgery
    Very competitive. Although people say they are your friend and team mate, they want you to fail so they can succeed

    Advice to Management

    Stick up for your employees and foster a good culture.
    Share information openly
    Be seen in the offices

    Great mentoring and training. They give you the tools to succeed! Excellent work life balance.

    Pros

    Office looks professional, salary was given on time

    Cons

    Keep changing their own staff, unprofessional Recruiters- recruiters are not keen into answering mails nor replying back repeated calls. They seem to be concerned on their earnings and not into progressing their business ettiquetes.

    Advice to Management

    Be careful on hiring your own Recruiters. Focus on the skills required and not on the looks. Most Recruiters have no recruiting background which can easily identify during the interview process. If this cannot be avoided, provide proper training to your Recruiters.

    Pros

    There are some fun people on staff.

    Cons

    This company has outdated systems and policies. It is not equal opportunity for women, which is disappointing when the human resources field is heavily weighted towards women. The commission structure is not attractive. Training is sub-par or non-existent.

    Advice to Management

    Update your policies to present day, and you will attract better recruiters. Update your ATS system.
    Get a training program in place for new people so that they don't flounder. Implement a mentorship program. Implement professional development planning and identify career paths for those who want to advance.

    Pros

    -very quick to find you a placement
    -good pay
    -very good pool of companies that they are associated with
    -very supportive recruiters
    -good/friendly group of people to work with
    -David Aplin staff will send you "appreciation gifts" while in the company

    Cons

    The only problem I had with David Aplin is that once my contract ends it is very difficult to keep in touch with the recruiter since they seem to dodge any ways of communication with them till they find another placement. Takes a really long time for them to communicate back and by that time employees have already found other positions with other companies.

    Advice to Management

    Keep an open relationship between employer and employee. Communicate better and assure employees what the current situation is, not leaving them waiting.
