    I worked at DAVIDsTEA full-time

    Pros

    - 50% employee discount - Tea on shift - coworkers are generally amazing - bright atmosphere

    Cons

    - upper management is highly disorganized (there was some issues with the board last year and the takeover was not smooth) - increasing expectations to be available/do extra work for hourly employees - last minute changes to merchandising, merchandising plans done on photoshop and not on actual shelves, inconsistencies in instructions - complaints/issues brought up to head office are often tossed around to... different departments before you get a simple answer - labour percentages are unrealistic (as they are in all retail environments)

I have been working at DAVIDsTEA part-time for less than a year

    Pros

50% employee discount on almost everything. Free tea to drink firing your shifts. Training was very comprehensive, and most things are second nature after a month or two. They seem to enjoy hiring and promoting from within the company, so there's room to grow. Management is caring, and show genuine interest in getting to know employees. The store has sales goals, but I don't feel pressure to push people to buy,... which makes customer interaction feel a lot more natural. Lots of regular, loyal customers who love the products and the culture of the company. The environment as a whole has been very welcoming.

    Cons

Post-holiday wintertime hasn't been very busy, so hours are severely cut down.

I have been working at DAVIDsTEA full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - fun, and dynamic work experience - open and welcoming to everyone - 50% off employee discount on everything except giftcards, mark-downs, and certain specialty items. - Flexible hours - Lenient dress code - Free drinks on shift - Amazing customer relations - Excellent employee assistance programs for those struggling with mental health/career planning. - A lot of opportunity for growth. If you play your... cards right, you can climb your way up the company ladder at a faster-than-average pace. - Some stores will pay to get you Food Safe certified. - Flexible return/exchange policy - Probably the only retailer I know that says they are "customer focused" and actually are. - Pay above minimum wage even for part time employees. - Healthy environment where the ultimate goal is to help staff grow with consistent coaching and positive reinforcement. - Many stores will play in-store games to incentivize staff (and sometimes there are company-wide contests where you can win free DAVIDsTEA product).

    Cons

    - Small teams mean less coverage when someone is sick or absent. - Long hair has to be tied back. - Frequent inventory hiccups - At times, unclear promotions/unclear promotional signage - Frequent customer complaints regarding quality and pricing. - If you're on management team, be prepared for a lot of paperwork. - While they do offer admin time to management team, note that you probably will have to work... off the clock to get reports/schedules/payroll submitted on time, as while you are in store, customers will be your #1 priority.

    Advice to Management

Being an ASM at DAVIDsTEA can be a lot of fun - if you are the right person for the job. If you don't like people, this job is not for you. You need to be social, making a connection with your customers (and remembering regulars by name, because they get really offended when you forget!!), treating all your customers like VIPs in a short period of time. My tips for success: - get an agenda and write everything... down - keep notes on the coaching and feedback that you dole out so you can revisit these issues later if they do not correct themselves. - bring treats for staff every now and then (they appreciate it, and it keeps them engaged). - work with your store manager at all times. Always CC them in emails and keep them part of the conversation, even when they're not in store. - be aware of your tone...DT is not the place for arrogance or intimidation. - get good at multi-tasking. You will often have six things on the go at once and no matter what you're working on, you always need to be aware of your store, your customers, and your staff. - do up a zone chart to keep everyone in their correct stations throughout a shift to maximize efficiency. - delegate tasks to part-time employees to pick away at in between customers so that you don't wind up doing everything yourself. - plan in-store games. The SM is usually too busy to do this themselves, but this is the perfect opportunity as an ASM to incentivize staff to be giving out great customer service, while also meeting sales goals.

I worked at DAVIDsTEA part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    • Was given decent hours and schedule (about 15 hours per week) • Coworkers were kind and caring • Most of the customers were pleasant; enjoyed helping them • Could drink unlimited teas during shift (great way to try out new blends) • Employee discount of 50% off all products

    Cons

    • Did not receive proper training, guidance or support; was blamed for "slow" operations despite being a new hire and still learning • Barely got acknowledged for my sales accomplishments and was instead criticized for not upselling • Had to quit one month into the job because the pressure was unbearable!

    Advice to Management

Realize the value of customer service!!! It makes me sad to experience first-hand how a company that prides itself in its customer service does not show that in their management. Selling to customers through patience, empathy and emotional intelligence is how sales will be made and business will succeed, NOT the practice of sneaking in upselling tactics that will make them feel cornered and used. Also, be... considerate of new employees and provide proper training, guidance and support! Understand that asking questions as well as making mistakes are part of the learning process. If you are expecting an employee who has been working for a few weeks to perform as if they have been working for a few years, do not be surprised when they walk out on you.

I have been working at DAVIDsTEA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Great co-workers -friendly customers -great experience for first job -lots of opportunities to learn and build skills -Employee Discount

    Cons

-Horrible Upper management -Constant miscommunication -Questionable sales tactics -Favouritism

    Advice to Management

Don't treat employees like they are disposable, constant threat of discipline and termination creates an unmotivated workforce. Don't rely on a company culture of negativity to push sales goals, and make your own better decisions before you push incompetent practices on your stores and blame the poor performance on the employees
