      Fun work environment, flexible

      Pros

      - 50 % discount on everything is awesome, and for the most part employees genuinely love and buy the products themselves so it makes it a lot easier for us to sell to customers - Very clear expectations from management - Supportive co-workers - Flexible scheduling, more hours available if you are reliable and perform well - Tons of helpful feedback given during training and continuously, both positive and negative help improve performance - Management flexible on different sales styles/don't have to follow a script as long as customer is happy and reasonable goals are met - Fast paced environment means there is always something to do and you won't be bored at work

      Cons

      - Frequent miscommunications regarding scheduling between managers could get frustrating - On call shifts that required calling in 2 hours before shift were inconvenient, especially when balancing other jobs and commitments - Last minute merch flip changes from upper management caused scrambles for late night staffing

      A disaster

      Pros

50% discount, free tea during shift, ability to plan and participate in events in your community, as a leader there were lots of opportunities to make decisions independently

      Cons

Terrible communication with head office- they left us on the hook for four months during Covid with little to no communication as to what the status of our jobs was and then suddenly turned around and said “sorry your store is closing!” Additionally, as a key holder I was only paid 50cents more than a tea guide which in my option was not fair compensation based on the amount of responsibility I had. Upper management seemed to have no clue what things were like at store level and what customers desired. Culture was almost toxically positive, any criticism or concern was shot down immediately and silenced

I wouldn't have applied if I knew what it had in store for me

      Pros

      - Free tea on shift - 50% discount on all products (except for sale items) - It's really fun to see all the new tea collections come in and get to do a taste test with the team! - When it is quiet you don't get too bored. It's pretty chill refilling tea tins and restocking items

      Cons

      - It is expected that you interact with customers as if you are getting paid commission but you only get paid hourly - Very corporate - If you need to make changes in availability, it must be done about 1 month in advance - Management did not have their priorities straight - All workers are to follow a pretty similar 'script' (for lack of better word) which gets to be rather repetitive. - On call shifts I have always had a passion for tea and enjoy sharing that love with the people around me. Having a job where I could help customers find the tea that is right for them seemed like the perfect job for me! Unfortunately I found myself up-selling products more than anything else.

Only good for high school students wanting very part time hours

      Pros

Free tea on shift, 50% discount. Very laid back uniform requirements.

      Cons

Very stingy with wages. They force you to literally follow a script when you talk to customers and it’s painfully robotic and not personable. If you aren’t management it’s very hard to get full time hours. I’d only recommend this job to someone still in high as their first job or if you want something very part time. They make you stand outside and give people samples regardless of the weather, not fun in the rain/snow. There were some very young supervisors (not a problem) but they were very inexperienced and were not able to properly help problematic customers and it was painful to pass off a customer to them and watch them struggle.

      Good job for tea lovers

      Pros

You can drink tea free of charge during your whole shifts. You get up to 50% discount on davids tea products that don't already have a discount. The job is not stressful at all.

      Cons

You don't get tips nor do you work on commission so it's not a really profitable job. You have to to sampling most days and it is not stimulating.

      Messy Management

Nov 24, 2019 - Tea Guide in Toronto, ON

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - 50% discount - able to drink tea on shift - usually pretty good regulars - usually good team members below management level

      Cons

      - company decided to not give out merit increases this year due to many losses in recent years, despite increasing the workload and making many aspects of working at store level more difficult (and also, despite the CEO lending $2million to a family member's business that was also going under) - constantly cutting labour - lack of communication from office to store level, and even between levels of management in store - employees that are low-performing are rarely followed up with and are held to a different, lower standard when it's known that they do not perform as well. Higher-performing staff are expected to pick up their slack without any form of compensation or appreciation - when merit increases existed, they were a joke. They were mostly based on your position, instead of experience/performance. If you had worked in a position for 3 years and earned your wage through appraisals, someone who got hired to the same position later got a raise to make the same amount that you did - management in-store does not adequately train members of staff, especially those that are promoted to higher positions. Lots of things are to be learned by yourself and if you make a mistake on one of these things it is your fault despite not being properly trained in the area - product quality went extremely downhill despite keeping prices the same, if not raising them. Brand loyalty both from customers and employees began to disappear because customers were not happy with products, promotions, and corporate customer service and the blame was placed on store employees - management only gives you feedback when it is negative and often in a way that makes it very personal. Nearly no feedback when you are performing well - only Store Managers are allowed to give feedback to their higher ups, even though they're rarely involved on the sales floor. If you attempt to give feedback that can be interpreted as negative to either your manager or a district manager you are automatically not a team player and it results in poor appraisal results

Awesome as far as retail goes!

      Pros

50% employee discount on almost everything. Free tea to drink firing your shifts. Training was very comprehensive, and most things are second nature after a month or two. They seem to enjoy hiring and promoting from within the company, so there's room to grow. Management is caring, and show genuine interest in getting to know employees. The store has sales goals, but I don't feel pressure to push people to buy, which makes customer interaction feel a lot more natural. Lots of regular, loyal customers who love the products and the culture of the company. The environment as a whole has been very welcoming.

      Cons

Post-holiday wintertime hasn't been very busy, so hours are severely cut down.
