I have been working at Crate and Barrel part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible scheduling - As a student and as someone who takes care of my younger siblings, I find that they are very understanding of my personal scheduling needs and are flexible. Good team support and help from everyone if you are new to the retail environment. Great training program after orientation - by my third shift I felt comfortable and confident enough to get by.

    Cons

Orientation could be a bit more helpful if it was 2 days instead of 1 intense day.

I worked at Crate and Barrel part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Coworkers were just about the only pros, also if you like the product it can be fun to look at the stuff all day. Discount is good but goods are still overpriced.

    Cons

The management was absolutely terrible, upper management has a god complex and is manipulative. The most toxic person I have ever encountered. Tries to humiliate you and make you seem inferior. Tells younger employees not to hold their hands certain ways or walk certain ways. Creates random rules about what employees can or cannot do based on their mood that day. All employees know of the issues and have complained to corporate many times but they have done nothing about it. You are expected to harass customers repeatedly and will be scolded if you don't. Even if they make it clear they want to be left alone you are expected and told to re-approach 2-3 times. At every step of the customer interaction you must up-sell and push products on people who don't need or want them. It really is a humiliating job. The only part of the job that I enjoyed is the coworkers, very kind people and always helpful. However, you aren't allowed to speak to coworkers for more than 20 seconds at a time, even if the store is practically empty and every customer has been helped. You have to watch the customer until the pick something up and offer help or show them something additional to buy. Interactions with coworkers will be broken up my management if you look a little too happy. There is no trust in employees, you must get your purse or bag checked every time you leave the back room for stolen merchandise. No freedom. You are constantly told what to do and who to talk to over the earpiece. However, if you truly form a connection with a customer and are chatting with them a little too long for management's liking, you will be told to disconnect with them and harass someone else. This company values "making connections with customers" but this only means if they are going to buy something that day. Save yourself, do not accept a job here.

I worked at Crate and Barrel full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are some truly good people who work for Crate, the customers are for the most part happy to come in and shop the store. I was able to build relationships not only with friends among coworkers, but professional relationships with customers. The new CEO has a great vision for the company and the improvements make sense for where they need to grow.

    Cons

The company culture changed. Management is encouraged to spend time hiding away in offices instead of being on the floor helping to drive sales and motivating associates. There was little accountability for issues at our store. Favouritism and harassment ran rampant throughout from the top managers down to part timers, when anything was brought up management would wave it off instead of dealing with the issues at hand. Same with bringing up anything that goes against corporate policy. People have been hired and placed in positions simply to fill them rather than looking for the right fit and being understaffed for a bit.

I have been working at Crate and Barrel part-time for more than a year

    Pros

There are some good things about working at Crate: - some great colleagues - flexible time off - good central location - excellent quality of products

    Cons

Here are the cons: - favouritism of certain staff, in terms of promotion because of friendship rather than accomplishment - hours so closely linked with productivity, pay is meager - working "full-time" hours yet called part-time so you do not receive benefits - a lot of product is CRUEL, too many animal related products - poor celebration of accomplishments and achievements, ex - If I have sold $6000 worth of product in a shift; can I get a "well done" or "thank you" ? it is not difficult. - too many managers not willing to work on the floor when needed, they would rather hide away in their office - product selection is the same year after year - product price point goes up every month; sending customers elsewhere

I worked at Crate and Barrel

    Pros

The staff are great. Really enjoyed working with all of them. Smart , kind funny. They knew their product well. I also really enjoyed most of the customers , inevitably the difficult ones were there, but it is retail so no surprise.

    Cons

Hands down the management. Had a recent new hire who never knew her role. Could not answer the most basic question, would hand off her job to virtually anyone to handle the situation be it a minor task, and most annoying an important one. Which in the end was better as at least we knew that the 20 year old would make the better call. The commissions in no way reflected a competitive compensation. Managers would also sell furniture, rugs etc right in front of you, take the commission even though you were ready and oh so willing to take the sale over in a timely fashion, re: at or near the beginning of the sale. It seemed as though they would try very hard NOT to pay out commissions to the Furniture Associates. No empowerment existed it seems, only constant reminders that we were the bottom store, therefore we were given inane directives of how to sell more. The furniture sales staff were seasoned for the most part so it felt redundant and belittling.

I worked at Crate and Barrel full-time for less than a year

    Pros

There are some amazing team members and talent at this location, but that's about the only thing this location has going for it.

    Cons

If you're looking to make money, look elsewhere. The compensation is horrible, it's barely a living wage. Maybe as a sales associate you make a decent wage, but working on commission is pointless. As a new furniture associate you receive a stipend for your first year, which means every 4 weeks, whether you make your commission or not, the company will top you up. However, you're only making a very minimal commission % until you reach the predetermined goal, than you'll make an additional (it's not by any means substantial) commission on anything over that, ps, it resets every four weeks. You're better off going to competitors in this market who will start you at 4 or 6% commission. This pay structure is not competitive at all, and the starting base wage is pretty pathetic. The store is not effectively run. And the expectation of the furniture team, when compared to the wage we're making, is actually ridiculous.
