I worked at Columbia International College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Students
    Location
    Coworkers
Close to Westdale so you can get lunch on a patio in the summer time

    Cons

    Management
    Wages/Pay are far below competitive
    Atmosphere
    Surveillance Environment
    Job Stability
    Culture of Fear
    Unjust dismissals are common
    No room for growth whatsoever

    Advice to Management

You need to be transparent. Hiding information from staff, avoiding answering questions and micromanaging people is the reason why the turnover is so high and why retention is so low. You make almost 40K a year from 1 student, and the school keeps growing and growing in population, but are unable to pay staff barely more than a minimum wage? If you want your staff to provide excellent customer service to students, how about starting with a HAPPY workforce first - who strive to do their best for a business that they believe in? How is the CEO on the sunshine list, while his employees are fighting for a liveable wage? INVEST IN PEOPLE.

I worked at Columbia International College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great co-workers
    Diverse workforce
    Meat package Christmas bonus

    Cons

Below standard pay although company is very profitable
Employees are viewed as disposable, not worth investing in or growing
Management is reactionary versus forward thinking
    Culture of fear and blame
Company minimally (at best) follows employment standards and H&S
No overtime or lieu although 50+ work hours are expected from certain salaried employees.
    No standard policies or procedures
Cover-up mistakes is a standard response when errors are found. That, or blame.

    Advice to Management

Have a little respect for employees (just a little would be a start). Maybe pay a living wage

    Cons

Very low pay, overworked, micromanaged, reactionary culture of fear, no growth opportunity, high turnover. Students are treated like clients, staff are treated like dirt.

Invest in your people - they are your most valuable asset. Stop reacting and start being proactive. Treat your staff with the "total care" that you expect them to show to students.
