I have been working at Circus World Displays full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    The people here are great

    Cons

This company is unlike any that I know, and not in a good way. I am also very perplexed as to who the people are here that have been giving such high reviews.
To break it down for you, this company is run by a family, with two disagreeing brothers as the managing directors. That right there is a major issue for why things are difficult. They rarely agree on issues that they should clearly be aligned with.
One brother, is completely set in his ways and old fashioned, refuses to allow staff (who are incredibly skilled to do the work they are hired to do), to improve and create content that would benefit the brands. He would rather people follow suit to exactly what he wants, and anyone who challenges a new way/modern thinking in terms of "less is more", is quickly terminated. His respect for his employees is shown in his own punctuality with meetings, and the higher than thou attitude that is reflected in communication between team members. Having to report to him requires lengthy and time wasting write-ups or agendas, and going over every detail as to why something didnt work.
As for the other brother, he is more up to speed and eager to create change, however his overall micromanaging, incredibly high expectations, contradictions and constant comparing to other companies creates a less than ideal work environment. Being challenged and having high goals is necessary for any person and business, but constantly being made to feel as though nothing is "perfect" and in turn feeling guilty is incredibly unhealthy.
There is a problem with some departments being understaffed, which leads to people taking on elements of other positions (without pay increase) to cover all bases, which again in turn can become stressful and unfair. Constantly being watched either by the cameras in every corner of the buildings, or the monitoring of what is on your computer screen, gets tiring very quickly.
There are some great products coming out of this company, however some become irrelevant and behind the times in technology, within a few short months compared to the competition. This is largely due to the fact that there is some sort of disconnect with product release dates, which are never met and often weeks or months past original times. This would be understandable once and while, but having this happen with every single product is concerning.

    Advice to Management

    Let go a little bit.

I have been working at Circus World Displays full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Fast paced never boring
    - great atmosphere with great employees
    - Genuinely love what I get to do everyday
    - Benefits
    - great company events, rewards, department lunches, contests, draws, parties, monthly lunches on the company etc.
    - Paid training - whether it be finishing a degree, diploma, or professional development the company will support you
    - discount on products
    - everyone has a part in creating great consumer electronics
    - company is constantly growing and there are many opportunities to advance
    - BOD has recently really begun to put forth an extra effort to make the company a better place by having an open forum where everyone in the company has an opportunity to address any ideas or concerns to help improve the company

    Things to consider:

    - to really be successful at this company you need to prove you are a valuable asset.
    - being negative is not the way to get through in this company. It is definitely picked up on and can hinder your experience and and ability to progress in the company.

    Cons

    - Company is lead by 2 managing directors who may not always be on the same page all the time. This can cause some bottlenecks in projects. Adapting to both different managing styles can also be a challenge, as their pace and processes are very different.
    - management needs to have a bit more authority to make decisions

    Advice to Management

    - Have a little more trust in your employees to make decisions that will better the company and products
    - Keep investing in employees professional development

SIDE NOTE: Most of the negative reviews are from former employees for a reason. Also we were encouraged to write HONEST reviews. No one is forced to do anything. I stand by review! This is a great company to work for in a great area.

I worked at Circus World Displays full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - fellow employees are wonderful to work with
    - not working at CWD

    Cons

    - every day, employees walk into a beige building with bars on the windows
    - both managing directors asked current employees to write positive reviews on this site
    - the one managing director uses big words he hears from educated employers and ends up sounding unprofessional
    - the BOD is formed of a mom and dad and their two sons, good luck with that
    - the BOD micro manages the death out of everyone
    - hr went from 5 employees to 1 at the end of 2014
    - turnover was 40% for 2014
    - once an employee leaves, they are badly talked about by managing directors or asked to work from home for their last two weeks so they do not talk to other employees
    - wage is low, hence why young professionals are hired
    - recruitment process drags on
    - to get ahead, you have to stay late. If you like to go home right at 5:00PM (because almost 9 hours isn't enough for them) and see your family - you wont make it at CWD. It shows them you are not putting your "all" into the company
    - many meetings are wasted on overly discussing employees growth. That employee falls behind on their work and ends up staying late putting most action items from meeting on the back burner.
    - computer usage monitored like its some sport to the BOD
    - cameras in every office, which the BOG watched from their phone to make sure other employees are not on their phone. Huge trust issues.

    Advice to Management

    - pointless, as they will ask someone to write a positive review so they don't have to focus on the negative ones.

    Pros

The employees are great- youthful and full of ambition

    Cons

Senior management micro manages the living soul out of the place. No one has any decision making abilities and every decision is scrutinized down to irrelevant details. This is why they like new grads- because they don't have the business knowledge to question the illogical processes currently in place. They have surveillance cameras in every office, hallway and lunchroom which they can access from their cell phones because they don't trust anyone, even monitoring Internet useage. One Managing director is fairly logical, however the other which manages a majority of the business makes rash decision that don't have any logic- and doesn't care to listen to listen to anyone else's opinion. This is a highly inefficient business as there are a lot of make-work projects that are thrown at people with minimal time to do them (so employees stay late) and then nothing gets done with them. Due to extremely high turnover (40% per year) the owners are making a push to change the culture, however the odd lunch here and there doesn't overcompensate for all of the other frustrations. The on onboarding process is great, however new employees are judged by the Managing Directors from the second they are hired. Most people are considered to "not be working out" within the first week because they question the illogical processes. It is not surprising that their HR department have went through 4 HR managers in five years in addition to 3 other HR roles- there seem to be ethics involved and any professional doesn't want to be a part of it. Those positive reviews and that have stated have been there long term unfortunately haven't worked anywhere else to know how unprofessional this environment is. They will explain the turnover during interviews as exiting employees failure to adapt to change, but is sheer frustration that there is no change.

    Advice to Management

They won't listen- but they should take the guidance and advice of the people they hire. They are far more knowledgable then you are.

I have been working at Circus World Displays full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - A Toronto-like company in Niagara. Didn't need to leave home to do what I love.
    - People here are awesome to work with. Friendly, funny and unique.
    - Room to grow. The company is growing every year and believes in internal promotion, There are a lot of opportunities for someone to learn and move up even cross department.
    - Culture: great company events, contests, draws, parties, monthly lunches on the company, example: costumes and department treat or treating on Halloween.
    - Training (paid training) has always been a part of CWD, if the employee inquired. Now they are even developing and suggesting training programs for employees to take advantage of.
    - Recognition programs
    - Half price on all CWD products, plus CWD bucks to use towards those already half price products. Stuff like: Home Theater speakers, docks, wireless technology, turntables, baby monitors, security systems.

    Cons

    Not cons, things to consider:

    - Face paced: team members must be adaptable, flexible, open minded, organized, manage & prioritize tasks
    - Be ready to work, show your value and contribute. No person here floats.
    - You can make a difference at this company if you try. You do need to put an effort in and give solutions, instead of complain.
    - Do not expect to come out of college/university and make the amount an experienced professional in your field does. Also, Niagara region does not pay Toronto wages.
    - I'm sure like everywhere there are people who like to "hate the man". Stay away from Negative Nancy's they'll drag you down.
    - Company is lead by 2 managing directors who may not always be on the same page all the time. This can cause some bottlenecks in projects. Adapting to both different managing styles can also be a challenge, as their pace and processes are very different.

    Advice to Management

    - Keep on the path of investing in your employees and making CWD a social place.
    - Get rid of silly rules that make people grumble like coffee before 10am. Leave that with their managers.
    - Make sure everywhere has an understanding of where we are are going as a company and why. Invite them to share in that vision.
    - I suggest sprucing the buildings up a bit more

I have been working at Circus World Displays full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Hours are reasonable.
    Fast pace, not boring.
Events and bbq's held throughout the year.

    Cons

Low pay compared to industry standards.
Micromanagement from the Managing directors, who are unable to trust the people they have hired.
Big brother is certainly watching. Security cameras, frequent & random walks through departments by the board of directors.
High turnover, constantly showing someone new what to do, only to watch them leave in a months time.
Majority of management are there because someone quit, not because they were qualified for the promotion.
Fast pace leads to lots of mistakes and things being missed, especially by those in upper management. Leads to a lot of headaches down the road for the real workers.

    Advice to Management

Hire managers who have experience doing the job they are there to do, and then listen to them. Allow the experts to show you how things should be run.
