      Pros

Best thing is the team work oriented environment, you'll never feel like you're drowning and no one wants to help. Staff education, focus on evidence based practice, collaborative governance, employee participation, all these are huge pros to working at CHLA. Management is always available to you, and they truly care about you as an employee.

      Cons

Pay can be better, especially with the rising cost of living. The parking situation can definitely improve.

Poor work-life balance and below-market pay

Oct 14, 2017 - Registered Nurse in Los Angeles, CA

      Pros

There is a certain prestige of working for this organization. You also receive discounts in the cafeteria and gift shop.

      Cons

Compensation is well below market value, especially considering the high cost of living in Los Angeles. If you are a salaried employee, the work-life balance is poor. It is expected of you to provide for your patients at all times. Admin support is extremely limited. There is no money for continuing education. You have to pay to attend conferences even if you are a presenter. The management structure makes no sense.

      Meaningful Work Place

      Pros

Happy work environment, you leave work knowing you made an impact on a child's life and his family. Overall good health benefits for the employee but not for the family.

      Cons

No raise beside the 2% COLA(Cost of Living) yearly. Difficult to obtain a promotion within the same department.

      Pros

Work with great minds from across the world. Contribute to a worthwhile cause in pediatric medicine. Los Angeles is a great city to live and work.

      Cons

Pay is mediocre, even after a market increase to make wages fair, most lower positions still below average, especially for a city with an enormous cost of living. In addition, employees have additional roles dumped on them, doing the work of multiple people and positions well above current job titles, but somehow no change in compensation. Benefits are horrible, very expensive(~15% of salary), come out of your "base salary", and have astronomical deductions for the coverage and amount paid. The same coverage can be obtained through Covered California at the same or even lower rates. On the research end, space and equipment are very limited. Most equipment is outdated and barely functioning. Available core services are less-than-helpful. Must travel to USC to receive any meaningful help. Researchers are very opinionated and many investigators are downright rude. Collaboration is difficult and deceit is rampant. Long story short, nothing is ever good enough here. The more you do, the more is expected of you, but don't expect your compensation to keep up. You will have many roadblocks thrown in your way but little help in overcoming them.

      Pros

Management is awesome. Strong support for nursing in regards to pt acquires and safe assignments. Autonomy with scheduling. Long term coworkers.

      Cons

Wages are low despite cost of living reviews. Merit based performance reviews were overhauled..very difficult to get a pay raise now as a nurse without attending a national conference and presenting a project, etc.

      Pros

I believe the care provided to children is excellent, however, some departments do not respond promptly to appointment requests. Many employees are friendly, good people.

      Cons

Salaries are comparatively low and receiving even a cost of living raise is totally dependent on whether an employee's supervisor bothers to do a review. Some high level executives treat their staff very badly and favoritism is rampant in many departments.

An employer with a worthy mission, but not without its share of turbulent turnovers.

      Pros

Owing to its relatively large work force, the hospital has reasonably good infrastructure. The Human Resources Department is well structured and functional.

      Cons

For most employees, the retirement "program" consists of only 3% matching of 401k contributions. Some departments are commonly though to be stingy regarding salaries, sometimes going years without cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) to match inflation.
