It used to be 5 stars but....

      Pros

This was a great place to get through the critical 1st year as a new grad RN. The residency program is extremely supportive and hones in on helping build resiliency to help you get through the pitfalls that commonly tank careers early on. The pay is okay - no one gets paid to work in pediatrics and we don't necessarily show up for the money.

      Cons

The administration brought in is geared toward running this hospital more like a regular hospital that is more concerned with the business side of things (I thought we were a non-profit??? I guess all the massive celebrity donations don't add up to much.) This has been amplified during the COVID pandemic with a massive restructuring that has added to the trauma many of us are already dealing with. They basically said under no uncertain terms that if you hope to move up the ranks here, there is probably not a place for you and, should you happen to move up, you will spend your career justifying your position. The admin has either forgotten or chosen to ignore that many of the people who were victims of the restructuring (people in the twilight of their careers who were extremely loyal to the hospital and excellent sources of valuable experience and knowledge new grads depend upon to provide the best care possible) were foundational in building CHLA into what it is known to be today. From this point on, it seems we will continue on elevating image and no longer on elevating care.

      Decent work place

      Pros

Big hospital with lots of resources. If you need anything to assist with the services provided, you can get it.

      Cons

Some of the medical doctors can be condescending to other professional doctors (non-MDs). CHLA is very political with some MDs who hold a lot of power because they came from prestigious universities.

The Ideal Workplace to Learn, Grow, and Heal

      Pros

The teamwork, collaboration, and culture of this hospital is something that is so positive, it can immediately be felt to anyone who steps foot in the hospital. People work in hospitals all over LA county who may pay higher salaries, but then they come to CHLA and don't leave which says a lot about the culture.

      Cons

CHLA is constantly changing and adapting to improve itself, so keeping up with all of the changes can prove to be difficult at times.

      Pros

CHLA was a wonderfully supportive place to work. Everyone, from housekeeping to administration, fosters an environment of equality and teamwork. As a RN I always felt supported in any of my endeavors, questions, or concerns. Any issues were immediately addressed. Families were encouraged to be as actively involved in their child's care as possible, and were invited daily on rounds with the physicians, RNs, pharmacists, and other specialty teams. It truly was a fantastic place to work!

      Cons

Pay is not as competitive as it should be, hopefully administration will work on this!

      Pros

Best thing is the team work oriented environment, you'll never feel like you're drowning and no one wants to help. Staff education, focus on evidence based practice, collaborative governance, employee participation, all these are huge pros to working at CHLA. Management is always available to you, and they truly care about you as an employee.

      Cons

Pay can be better, especially with the rising cost of living. The parking situation can definitely improve.

      Pros

Supportive staff, opportunities for learning and growth, ability to build relationships with families and coworkers. Ability to learn about various units within the hospital. CHLA offers continuing education courses, and SOcial workers are able to participate within interdisciplinary teams where their voices are heard and respected.

      Cons

Fast paced environment requires adaptability. Must be willing to provide services for grief and loss/death and dying. No cons here
