The Language Education Center is a great place to work. The basic teaching hours are 12 class hours.
Jul. 22, 2013 - English Language Instructor in CheongjuRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
We get a basic schedule of 12 Class hours, a shared office and a studio apartment. We have the option of teaching extra hours, sometimes in the basic conversation stream, sometimes for specific departments. The classes are required by Korean law so there is a cross-section of abilities and interests in the classes. We have had 3 Head Teachers in the last 5 years who have been supportive and helpful (but not always).
Cons
The administration has not been as hands-off as in the past. The changes in administration has meant that paper for handouts is not always available; there are nit-picky issues of office supplies not available and occasionally the hiring does not take into consideration past issues. The classes are not level-tested so we have a variety of students who range from non-existent English to very good speakers. The overtime pay (in the university classes) is not commensurate with the rest of the university. The University has begun hiring English specialists in specific Departments but do not "seem" to consider teachers from the LEC stream. (This seems to be common in many Korean universities).

Pros
-Free housing ("one room"/studio style) with subsidized utility bills are ideal for single folks looking to save money. -Admin provides ample freedom for employees to pursue teaching practices and assessment methods they deem to be appropriate. -Work load (12 hours/week, 4 days/week, 15 wks/semester twice a year) is limited which provides ample free time. -Opportunities outside of typical work exist in and around campus (I guest lectured once and taught in another dept), but can be difficult to find.
Cons
-No airfare/relocation assistance stipend (provided by some other organizations/programs in Korea). -Overtime pay is considerably less than regular hours. -Little room for upward mobility because only 1 management position for foreigners. -Concerns regarding the universities poor marks in national reviews fuel fears of job insecurity.

CJU - Great place to work with a few cavaets.
May 10, 2016 - Professor in CheongjuRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great students, great vacation, pretty good pay.
Cons
Small issues that affect daily working atmosphere can be problematic: such as, getting "nickled and dimed" on office supplies, no Korean support allowed by the Director. Some people have problems with accommodations; for example, you don't have any choice between a housing supplement or an apartment. Mind you, I've been gone for a year and some of these might have changed.

Good Place to Work
Feb. 20, 2018 - Foreign "Professor" in CheongjuRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
No Micromanagement Freedom to develop classes as you feel are best for students (within a guideline) Teaching is rewarding Great Vacation Better than average industry salary for foreign lecturers
Cons
From time to time administration does things without thinking them through or at the last minute and disorganized. This typically inconveniences you more than them and you have to change things based on their lack of planning / thinking
