I worked at Charles River Development for more than a year

    Pros

Great product (CRIMS), OK employee training. Unbeatable work-life balance as work-from-home is greatly encouraged (for the Canada-based employees) Folks in Product Development are highly experienced, great wealth of industry knowledge.

    Cons

Poor management structure. Unreasonably high emphasis on 'billables' creates an environment where everyone is out for themselves, no team atmosphere. Lack of commitment to fix-and-improve things.

    Advice to Management

Work with employees to make a more pleasant work environment, work towards a more dynamic structure and treat people with respect.

I have been working at Charles River Development full-time for less than a year

    Pros

free gym downstairs. The company is expanding

    Cons

Please interview your manager before accepting the offer, regarding work-life balance. It varies a lot by teams, but ... Some managers will call your cell OUTSIDE working hours, either evenings or even SUNDAYs and need IMMEDIATE response. This happens A LOT! No respect on personal life at all (note: my function is not customer facing or mission critical, but still everything is due yesterday). The managers may also call you for example if he is stuck in traffic. Very common to work 60 hours without any appreciation. Work from home in the team was considered as a Luxury, even though the company claims to offer flexibility.

I worked at Charles River Development full-time

    Pros

salary is competitive mall is close by...

    Cons

no work culture at all unfriendly environment buggy proprietary technologies with close to zero or outdated documentation outdated workplace - unless you are nostalgic about 80th office space no teamwork (you barely talking to your team) no team buildings (drink alone, eat alone will be your credo) no introductory steps for newcomers - you will be expected to perform as good as people working here for 10 years from day 1 you are expected to work long hours (directly or indirectly) micromanagement (up to ridiculous every hour check) don't expect work/life balance here - work hard, play hard is not about this company - work hard, work hard - people are expected to spend 9 hours working and are ashamed to be relaxed every team has it's own code style which is far from standards no freedom to make your own decision how to implement code, you will be forced to do as your team lead sees it even if it's obvious anti-pattern

    Advice to Management

hire a company to audit your processes, code, solutions, architecture and make sure that people have their titles because of their qualities / abilities, and not just because of the long work in the company

I have been working at Charles River Development full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Good work life balance. - People will give you enough time to get on pace with a lot of things you see. - People will help you settle down. - The company is financially stable and rarely will you see layoffs.

    Cons

    - Technology wise they are at least 10 years behind the market. The reason is that they need a stable product for some legacy customers to support legacy features and thus are very reluctant to jump on new things. - Company culture is not great. They do not permit work from home(at all), its a strict 9 hr work day so even if you finish your tasks earlier you have to sit idol for the rest of the time. And this is not team specific, I have seen this across all teams in development. - If you are a tech savy engineer looking to join a company which will bring you up to speed with the latest Technologies then crd is a BIG NO!!

I have been working at Charles River Development full-time

    Pros

Great client base you can learn from. Smart colleagues that challenge you every day.

    Cons

No work/life balance here, forget about socializing with colleagues, the culture is so dry and uneventful. Work from home is non-existent No room for advancement and developing your career. Lack of transparency, firings occur regularly and without clear circumstances. Management is authoritarian, only look for themselves, and they can fire you at any given time just to save their job.

I worked at Charles River Development full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    I can't think of a single pro!

    Cons

The list is too long. - The management has absolutely no respect for their employees. They fire somebody just so they can keep the employees on their toes. And they don't like you mingling with your co-workers! - Zero team activities. Not even a team lunch once a year. - There are absolutely no perks. I think the only perk is they provide water and coffee for free. - Just forget about your work/life balance, social life. They have a weird 45 hours work week. No working from home. And they are monitoring you all the time! BEWARE! - The managers are inexperienced. They do everything else other than managing. - no growth opportunities, no bonus, not a great salary, raises are nominal.

    Advice to Management

Be compassionate and respect your employees. Give feedback if you think somebody needs help. At least try to give prior warning before just firing somebody because of their performance or any other reason.

I worked at Charles River Development full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Charles River is a good place to work with some very smart people. Work happens at a good cadence so good work life balance. Good pay compared to other companies. The company is doing well with good growth. Flexible working hours.

    Cons

Does not encourage working from home. Limited opportunities for growth. No Bonus or other incentive structure. Scope for independent development and experimentation is minimal.

    Advice to Management

Provide more incentives and growth opportunities. Give independence to developers to try new things to improve the product. Ideas seem to set in the stone from management with little opportunity for input from developers.
