I have been working at Cengage full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company really does care about students and making learning affordable. The have a decent work/life balance environment.

    Cons

Some of their business decisions are short-sighted, so there are a lot of reorgs, which result in layoffs. They are starting to pull back on the ability to work remotely, which may limit their ability to attract and retain quality talent.

Great co-workers, focused and hard working. Work/life balance. Ability to work from home. Willing to take risks, be aggressive in a very hard market.

I worked at Cengage full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Benefits, Bonus, and I did like working with my co-workers.

    Cons

Stressful work environment that was micro-managed. No room for advancement. Advancement is based on the buddy system not on succcess within the company. This results in highly unqualified people managing the company. There were 4 reorgs in the 6 years I was with the company . I had 6 different managers and 4 different territories -no consistency. Lots of technical...

    Advice to Management

Be loyal to the people that work for you. I have seen people let go that would move mountains for Cengage yet Cengage let them go without much thought. People are not disposable and it is expensive to replace qualified people.

I worked at Cengage full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

My team was the best thing about the job. From the production assistants to content developers/learning designers to marketing, most of the people who had individual contributor roles were dedicated, hard-working, and collaborative. There was a sense of camaraderie and we really pulled for one another. Work-life balance was easy to maintain. There were a lot of opportunities to WFH and, depending on your location/role,...

    Cons

Too many to fully list: - No coherent vision from ELT. Priorities were constantly shifting with little explanation beyond "we think this makes sense." - Constant reorgs. So many smart, talented, dedicated people have been unceremoniously dumped that it's hard to fathom how things are still running. - Rampant favoritism. Certainly in terms of promotion and retention,...

    Advice to Management

Honestly, why bother? Management is an echo chamber filled with dubious promotions and a horrible track record. Maybe if you had some criteria for identifying and developing talent, management wouldn't be filled with people who either got on the good side of someone important or failed at one of your competitors. I mean, seriously, it was a running joke that the easiest way to get promoted was to leave, fail somewhere...

I have been working at Cengage full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great people to work with - very team oriented.

    Cons

Very stressful industry-spread very thin to cover many disciplines and products and it feels like you do many things mediocre instead of a few things really well. Pay seems low for how much work/effort is put out. With challenges in the industry, it is tough, even with new subscription model. Higher ed space can be challenging to move to digital age. I've heard of many reorgs...

I worked at Cengage full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

If you are looking for a caustic, abhorrent work environment, this is your place!

    Cons

CL claims that developing a positive corporate culture is at the core of their mission. In actuality, they could care less about who you are as a person. And as for your personal track record of success? It's pretty much worthless when it comes to their (ongoing) restructures and reorgs.

    Advice to Management

Don't take yourself too seriously, you too are replaceable.

I have been working at Cengage full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

New management teams are focused on building a transparent, supportive, family-style work culture to foster success. I applaud the level of transparency among departments and the willingness to work together to achieve goals. Great personal and professional development opportunities. Company is good at recognizing talent, and promoting from within. Every position is considered a stepping stone to something better. If...

    Cons

The company pays on average less than its competitors and salary increases are hard to get without providing a competitive offer, even when raises are well deserved. Several recent internal reorgs have created a feeling of insecurity towards job retention. You may find yourself with more responsibilities than you signed on for and lacking adequate compensation.

    Advice to Management

Keep building competent teams and make sure to recognize and take good financial care of the top employees. The best performers will jump ship if they feel undervalued, and others will pay good money for their talents.

I worked at Cengage full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Coworkers are great, benefits are decent, flexible work schedule if something comes up with family, working to improve education for students is rewarding

    Cons

Numerous reorgs and down sizing, it is only a matter of time before this company no longer exists

    Advice to Management

There is so much talent in the ranks of this company you need to appreciate your employees without them you have nothing

I have been working at Cengage full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Have been in this industry for 20+ years. Love working with colleges, instructors and students!

    Cons

Many collegues/rock stars have left due to constant reorgs, change in strategy & impossible workloads. Employees are abused as we are working 70+ hrs per week. Zero communication from Executive and or District Managers. So much unrest and management chooses to not address the sitution. Selling season is basically over and no one has thier goals.
