I worked at Canadian Blood Services part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits, that's it!

    Cons

No full-time jobs, even when you have sometimes 50 hours/week. Absolutely no room for career advancement. Odd and long shifts - scheduling is a nightmare. Management doesn't care, at the end the drivers running the (logistics) show and covering all mistakes. Favoritism. "Employee appreciation day": A joke, because non-existent except a standardized email...

    Advice to Management

Don't treat "front line employees" like numbers and give them a proper full-time job with some appreciation as well. And remember: Everybody is replaceable!

    Cons

Never advancement, low pay, no beneifits because nobody will ever be full time.

    Advice to Management

Make it a real job instead of using people the way the school system did . You will one day face a union.

I have been working at Canadian Blood Services part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

First and foremost , being a frontline employee at CBS gives you the opportunity to have a big hand in the saving of lives and keeping Canadas blood supply safe. Most of us who work here have been personally touched by the need for blood and blood products, be it a family member or friend, and take a lot of pride that at the end of the day we have played a role in improving, even extending a persons life.Thats a... good feeling.

    Cons

As of late, Canadian Blood Services hierarchy have deemed it appropriate to continually restructure, reorg, rename, downsize and close clinics in the name of budget restraint. Having the CEO (ironically, a doctor) declare that we are NOT a humanitarian organization but a manufacturer of biological pharmaceuticals, from coast to coast the frontline workers of CBS have systematically been under attack through the... removal of any form of job security through changes in collective agreements province by province. Case in point ; Charlottetown staff who , in order to maintain 6 guaranteed PART TIME positions of 11 actual staff have been on strike since labor day. The common phrase around CBS is "part time job with a full time commitment"....which with ever changing schedules and duties , is very true. Unfortunately, the commitment back to the staff is sorely lacking.

    Advice to Management

Drop the corporate approach and give your part timers a bit of security...that will do wonders for employee retention . We are not a corporation...we are a proud public service....we are responsible to the tax payer but shouldn't the patient come first?

I have been working at Canadian Blood Services

    Pros

Saving lives of people in dire need of blood and blood products to save their lives. To make a safe and reliable product.

    Cons

Management does not use the advice of employees (who do the Job) when making decisions about these jobs. There are too many departments doing what they want instead of working together. Health and safety of the staff has slipped a lot lately. Made to drive long distances in snow storms with vehicles with no snow tires. Many long shifts back to back to back... Does not promote from within but would rather hire an... unexperienced person from outside instead of the experienced person in the system already who knows the job.

    Advice to Management

Health and safety should be the #1 priority. For example London's vans and trucks do not have snow tires for the winter. Why is this but to save money at the expense of safety of the employees who have to go out into snow storms. Be truthful instead of lying most of the time... Human resources is totally company oriented and often says that employees doctors are incompetent when forms or doctors notes do not go the... way they want. Who are they to question a licensed doctor. They are constantly lying to employees instead of telling the truth.
