    CBC/Radio-Canada Response

    June 8, 2020Social Media Advisor

Thanks for sharing your insights with us. We are glad to hear that you enjoy the work and your colleagues. You also flagged some pretty serious issues. As we have all been sharply reminded this past month, anti-Black racism continues to be a real problem pretty much everywhere. As Canada's public broadcaster, we have a responsibility to do better and to be better. Last week, our CEO announced that for all senior manager positions being hired going forward, they must all be open to competition. We will also now require that a minimum of one in two candidates interviewed are from the three equity groups (Indigenous peoples and/or persons with disabilities and/or visible minorities) and at least one diversity and inclusion question be asked of all candidates. While our numbers have improved since 2015, we will continue to keep moving forward. These are small steps, but I hope that you will also continue to contribute your hard work and experience to help keep us moving in the right direction.

I have been working at CBC/Radio-Canada

    Pros

The technology stack is nice and mostly up to date Accommodations for family life are good and the health plan is the best I've seen.

    Cons

It is as bureaucratic as you might assume from a big organization. They are not able to do many big projects at the same time and things move slow. Management is usually in the way. Lots of micro-management. They come up with pilote projets for simple things that are granted elsewhere.

Hi! Thanks for the insightful comments! Glad to hear you feel supported in your work/life balance. While it may feel like approvals are not granted for major projects as easily as you would expect elsewhere, we have to ensure we are accountable to Canadians for the decisions we make. After all, they are footing the bill for most of what we do! Thanks again for the feedback.

I worked at CBC/Radio-Canada full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

If you believe in a national public broadcaster then this is the place to be. In my department, we have good support from management. Learning opportunities are unlimited, it's almost up to you how you want to create impacts. Good technology stack, good test & learn culture, team demo, department-wide demo. People are amazing, down to earth and easy to get along.

    Cons

Some blindside from management sometimes. It's difficult to change some rules due to union status/protection. Some career growth but not for all.
