Pros
Cons
  • You can't blame their culture for having so few paid staff, therefore raising so much more for important research (in 11 reviews)

  • Staff and volunteers are not always respected, I always treated my volunteers with upmost respect, small tokens of thanks goes an awful long way (in 5 reviews)

I have been working at British Heart Foundation part-time

    Pros

    Great volunteers
    Friendly atmosphere
    Discount on donated stock
Allowed to look through before goes on sale
    Flexible hours
    Kitchen and toilet on site

    Cons

Horrible boss who has favourite volunteers and isn't afraid to let you know which they are
Sexual references constantly given even when the time and place doesn't call for it
Manager that constantly nags you about time-keeping even if you are a volunteer
A freezing cold work place - 4 layers of clothing required some days
Manager who will not take Area Manager's advice and says "no" even when the AM is trying to help
Expected to start work the minute you get through the door even if you haven't even taken your coat off
Kitchen disgusting some days and no-one wants to clean it.
No-one can be bothered to change the toilet roll so just puts the new one on top of the holder

    Advice to Management

TREAT ALL VOLUNTEERS EXACTLY THE SAME!

    Pros

You are working for a charity, always meeting new people, finding new things

    Cons

It is run like a corporate company, paid staff always stressed and anxious about meeting unrealistic targets set by HQ.

    Advice to Management

Shop Managers need to be IT litterate

    Pros

Surrounded by great colleagues, who were hardworking, talented, full of great ideas and energy and wonderful to work with.
Working to support a great cause helping to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease.

    Cons

It may be department dependent - but managers very stuck in their ways, lack of pro-activity (suggestions turned down until brought up another time), lack of innovation or building on people's ideas; resistant to change to improve processes or ways of working, still paper based - a lot of money wasted on printing off emails and storing in files rather then using systems (found it very unusually working in this way), working hours very inflexible - working at home is difficult, lack of flexibility for health appointments, hours very rigid (even for senior staff). Unfortunately one of the worst departments I have worked in within the charity sector, which was a real shame!

    Advice to Management

Managers should be reviewed and their work overseen - young people with fresh ideas, enthusiasm and experience of other organisations should be seen as positive; new ways of working should be explored and implemented to improve the efficiency and productivity of departments to ensure the public's money is well spent; people should not be penalised for being unwell at work or attending important health appointments - for a organisation working to improve the health of people this was a huge shock and should be noted by all incoming employees. Again probably department and manager dependent.
