I have been working at Branksome Hall full-time

    Pros

The pay and benefits are good

    Cons

My co-workers are simply appalling. They bully you and upper management or HR take no action. 50+ year old people think they can teach their much younger counterparts how to perform basic Excel functions. On top of all that, the double standards are just horrible.

I worked at Branksome Hall for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of good perks Great kids, some of the brightest Great workshops

    Cons

Some people are lovely, but unfortunately there are quite a few cliquey/catty people who make it uncomfortable by going out of their way to commit microaggressions and talk behind peoples' backs, make it obvious they don't get along, etc.

I worked at Branksome Hall full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Jeju is beautiful and the community in the locality is great. The pay is good.

    Cons

The school is poorly managed, with the senior management team having little experience about what they are doing. The parents are incredibly pushy and there is a lack of respect for the teachers within the school. The children are entitled and most of them are below the expected level for their age in all subjects (little academic rigor and inconsistency’s in what is being taught to them). The Human Resources team are unhelpful and dodge their workload. There is a general low morale within the staff which has resulted in a high turnover. Teachers are hired with limited experience and not offered any professional development.

I have been working at Branksome Hall full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The Heads of House are open to Residence dons ideas about how to improve student experience and happiness. If you are willing to put in hard work and show initiative, it is a very enjoyable and rewarding role. However, this flexibility also means it is possible to become easily bored or disillusioned. The overall package is very good. Whilst the pay is lower than a teacher at the school, the package includes three meals a day, accommodation, return flight to home destination, medical, and severance at end of employment. Accommodation is shared but the bedrooms are large and comfortable, as is shared kitchen/living room. Shared with one or two other female staff, providing an opportunity to socialise. Option to have own larger don room if preferred. Work hours are from 3PM till 9PM, plus overnight duties on some days of the week. Overall, this works out to be a lot of free time during the day, (plenty of time to catch up on sleep from overnights). Management and Heads of House are very honest during both the interview process and induction about the variety of tasks and duties that the role includes. I was well informed of the fact that it some days are extremely busy and exhausting, whilst other days are slow and relaxed. This is a very accurate description of the role! Great opportunity to develop pastoral care skills and get to know students outside of the classroom. If you want to be a teacher, this is a perfect role to figure out if you enjoy working with this age group (13 to 18), and learn more about communicating with teenagers (very useful for classroom management practice!). If you show willing and enthusiasm, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the day school if you want to become a teacher someday. Teachers are very friendly and welcoming but extremely busy. Therefore if you want to observe classes, you need to be proactive and reach out. The Head of Boarding is committed to making changes to the boarding program so as to improve the overall experience for staff and students alike. For example, the need for us to be well-rested and mentally healthy is prioritised by the Head of Boarding, who regularly asks for feedback on how to improve overnight duties and implements the requested changes where possible. We are always asked for feedback and input, and there regular meetings for open discussion of any issues. Also, the open-door policy of the Heads of House means that we always have a safe space to voice our concerns or problems.

    Cons

As the accommodation is within the boarding house itself, this means there are quite tight regulations regarding visitors. Whilst it is obviously necessary to safeguard the students, this does make it difficult to have a social life sometimes. Visitors are allowed when the students are at school, but special permission is required. There are also very specific rules about having people to stay during vacation periods. Jeju is a beautiful island but it could be considered a bit isolated and boring if you enjoy city life. The school is situated in the countryside, as part of a global education center (GEC). To get to any city or developed area, several long bus journeys are required. That said, the GEC is developing rapidly, and there are more cafes, restaurants and bars to enjoy every week it seems. If you love hiking, cycling and being outdoors, this is the perfect island for you! The coast is stunning, the food is delicious and Korean people are extremely accommodating and friendly.

I have been working at Branksome Hall full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Free housing (shared with two other people, in the boarding house so forget your privacy for the whole year) Free meals (only lunch is good) Free "insurance" (doesn't cover dental, optical, or anything that costs a lot here in Korea, so watch out) All pros come with their terms and conditions and you don't find out till you get here and get stuck working the contract

    Cons

Working hours are insane (with overnight duties every week) No growth in the boarding program (work forever on a $5/hr salary) No PD (PDs are usually led by the residence head and not relevant to professional growth) Residence staff is treated poorly / or largely ignored by everyone else Extra duties on said $5/hr salary (planning, executing, leading activities and trips, supervising students 24/7) Senior management does.not.care.
