Do NOT waste your time and sanity

      Pros

I honestly cannot think of a single one.

      Cons

Worked at the van private branch for a while. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON BAYSHORE. This company is only about the bottom line ($$) at the expense of staff and worse, patients. If you are a nurse this job will force you to practice unsafely and at risk to your license. They send you out with almost no information on the patient and to do skills that you may not even know. Schedulers dont have a medical background and dont understand what theyre asking you to do (ie that theyre putting you and the patient in an unsafe situation). They will guilt you, try to force you to take shifts, threaten job abandonment, cut your hours. They never hire full or part time staff-only casual. Your shifts are NOT guaranteed and are at the whims of the patients who often cancel and you will not be paid for time missed. The only time you get paid for cancellations are if you actually showed up to the patients house and even then they pay you the lowest possible amount. You do not get sick days and you do not get paid vacation. You have to use your own car, and if you want semi decent hours you will have to drive all over the lower mainland. IE abbotsford to richmind to north van to burnaby. They claim to give 'travel time' ON OCCASION but its 1/2 your hourly rate AND THEY OFTEN GIVE WAY LESS MONEY THAN YOU SPEND WITH TIME AND KMS CONSIDERED. You will spend your own dollars on your own time driving across the region for 8 hours for maybe 5 or 6 hours of pay in a day, IF you are lucky. And If you put that you have the availability on a sunday, and they need a nurse for 1 hour in surrey on that sunday, they will guilt you and punish you if you decline. Not to mention that the vancouver branch has gone so far down the rabbit hole under new management and huge turn overs that leave you completely burnt out for way less pay than you're worth. And they make you sit in the patients house to document, and you leave your documentation in the house so the patient can do god knows what to it. If you ever had to go to court on that documentation you will be out of luck. Stay away! Poor pay, abysmal training, favouritism, unsafe work for your license AND patients, zero respect. I got a new job and made as much money in 3 months as I did in my 7 months with bayshore. And if you want to take this job as a money on the side or temporary thing.. You are better off NOT DOING IT. It looks bad on a resume because the big employers know how poor the quality of work is. It will make you look bad. Oh, and they hire home support workers who arent licensed/registered as is required by the province. Some of the people they hired made me do a double take as they know nothing and shows the total desperation of the company. Horrible horrible HORRIBLE!!!!!!!

They do not care about their employees

      Pros

Flexible schedule(sometimes), Meaningful work. Nice interactions with people in need.

      Cons

exploit workers, unpaid travel time, overload you with work or underload you with work, do not support you on workplace issues (which are sometimes violent). Ultimately, they are a business and they do not care about you as an employee

Only work there if you are desperate and think short term not long term.

      Pros

They offer regular courses to help you grow as a personal support worker. Give you a Blackberry so you have minimal contact with the office. That worked for me anyway. Better pay than most Agencies. Fair system of distributing requests to PSWs to pick up new clients, but you have to check your BB all the time. They do offer medical benefits which is rare in this industry. Loved most of my clients dearly and was always sad to see their decline and the stress their family experienced.

      Cons

Management has changed and not for the better. If you start there with the understanding you can't work w/e, that won't last. They will threaten to terminate you immediately if you don't do alternating w/e. You will work from 7 am to 10 pm if you let them schedule you and you will only be paid for a 6 to 8 hour day. If you have children/parent/spouse, you will have trouble seeing them when they are awake, if at all. If a client complains about you, no matter what you say, they will write up a letter and not change it even if the client lied and you can prove it. No pension, no sick day pay, huge staff turnover (both office and PSWs and RNs). Don't tell them you have a car. Otherwise you will be driving all over the place (1/2 hour to 45 minutes between clients sometimes), no paid travel time and terrible car allowance, Even if they tell you the drive time is 5 minutes between clients, they will be lying. If you want work/life balance, your paycheques will be very small and they don't care. I see no chance for growth in this company. You could try going to school to further yourself, but you will make very little $ to support home and education expenses. Bayshore just cares about the income generated taking care of seniors and too many PSWs who don't care about anything but their paycheque amount. They put their clients and caregivers at serious risk by avoiding when a client starts a sharp decline in abilities. I can only assume to keep the $ flowing in by having the client staying in their home. You have to learn how to say "No" or they will wear you down to nothing.
