I worked at Barnes & Noble part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Decent pay, flexible hours, 30% employee discount

    Cons

There are some great people who work here, but the environment is very unwelcoming, clique-ish, and the shifts leads are very passive aggressive. There was a LOT of gossip in the workplace from shiftleads about current and former staff. One store manager said something extremely rude about me behindmy back. Management knew about the petty and toxic work environment but really didnt do much about it. Employees cycle through very quickly. Many people they hired quit within a month. There were few consistent employees within the cafe. At the end of each day, we had to count all the pastries that were about to expire. Because they were day olds we had to get rid of them, of course. After doing the count, we were required by management to throw away perfectly fine food. We werent allowed to take it home, donate it to a shelter or eat it after our shift. For some reason they made us waste it - it wasnt just a few things, it was usually an entire bin full of about 15 pastries and food items. There are also no tips for the baristas. This is more about this location rather than the entire company though, and only about the cafe. There are some very great and nice to work with coworkers and managers there, but overall the environment was very unhealthy.
