I have been working at Bain & Company as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Coming from the nonprofit world, I thought I'd be a fish out of water in consulting. At Bain I always felt supported by my team, by the culture, and the many opportunities for learning on the job. I had a fantastic time despite long hours and high expectations. I was challenged plenty, learned a ton, and look forward to returning full-time.

    Cons

The consulting lifestyle is a big commitment, and while I was given more flexibility than I expected as an intern, the job is a significant lifestyle commitment.

    Advice to Management

Local staffing model is great, but in busy times I think suboptimal decisions can be made - protect staffing managers.

I suspect that many interns shared your fear about being a 'fish out of water' (I certainly did more than a decade ago!) In fact, I've witnessed many people from a wide range of backgrounds be... More

    Pros

Really great people. I always feel inspired at Bain and get great proffessional development opportunities. We also get a lot of responsibility

    Cons

Work life balance can be an issue. Hard to know how tough a given week will be in advance so making social plan can be challenging.

    Advice to Management

Management has managed downturn really well. I would make a push to enter government space give their greater involvement in corporate america.

I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Bain has been the absolute best place to start my career out of undergrad. The firm has an incredibly supportive culture of professional and personal growth (both at and beyond Bain). Across global offices, the company is made up of down to earth, yet very high caliber and talented individuals who love to work and play hard. I've received the best formal and informal business training and Bain has opened doors and set me up to pursue careers in any business field I can imagine. Bain is a truly special and unique company and I feel so lucky to work here.

    Cons

The consulting job has very high upside in terms of training, boosting your career, and compensation. However, the work is challenging, the hours can be long, and you'll be pushed outside of your comfort zone often. It's an incredibly high learning curve and as soon as you feel comfortable, your teams will push you into new responsibilities. This type of work and lifestyle is tough for those who are looking for a sustainable long term career.

I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - People at Bain are top notch
    - Interesting work
    - Culture is great, without being too overwhelming / in your face
    - Seems to be a real focus on diversity, although more progress is needed
    - You can make it what you want
    - Exit opportunities are exceptional

    Cons

    - As with all project-based work, projects are variable - can get stuck with a bad workstream or project for a couple of months
    - Can get 'stuck' at a certain development level if supervisor isn't focused on your success
    - Pay feels low at times given the number of hours worked
