I have been working at BC Ferries full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Purportedly the best benefit package in Victoria Good hours of operation and flexibility in work hours Community focused; green-focus and charitable organizations Endless opportunities for career path and promotion for the right person Terrific company to start or end ones career

    Cons

IT Department is quite dysfunctional Weak leadership from directors and managers with technical knowledge but poor and/or no leadership/management/people skills Gender and age discrimination is very apparent; gender inequity is a hot topic Bullying and harassment are prohibited by BCF but seemingly tolerated within IT Strong and valuable consultants whisked away to comply with "no more contractors" and yet exception made for one consultant; appointed key role in the organization and yet yet to deliver anything concrete Lots of talk about resetting the culture however no signs of change, no communication about strategy, and no sense of urgency present.

I worked at BC Ferries for more than 3 years

    Pros

Compensation is relatively high and the management overall was very supportive and friendly.

    Cons

On call generally. Hard to get full time hours and they have a very strict on call policy. Part of the company is unionized which means that there are a lot of people who might not be the best in their positions and moving up is slow and ineffective.
