I worked at Audible full-time for more than a year

    Pros

AMZN RSUs. not so great free lunch, good product

    Cons

Not sure where to start but nevertheless - 1. Politics - the senior management Directors and above also aspiring senior managers are all seasoned career politicians who survive on ruining the lives of the worker bees/minions. They absolutely treat these hard working smart minions as canon fodder and often lead them on death march projects. These death march projects are nothing more than ill-conceived whims of... a senior career politician who wants to prove a point which has nothing to do with the customer or the business 2. The fledgling data science /analytics team as well as the engineering teams are treated like trash by the entitled "Business" teams read - product & marketing. These are for all practical purposes clueless egomaniacs defending their ivory towers and milking a great product developed decades back. 3. Extremely high turnover rate - if you are in one of these minion teams doing most of the meaningful work surviving 1 year in this mess will be like winning an olympic gold medal. Working on meaningless death march projects and rubbish ideas of the "business" stakeholders will be your job day in day out. Surviving one fire drill after another is the order of business here and you will feel a high adrenaline rush every moment thinking - "gosh I survived this trainwreck" 4. Great place to learn politics - should you choose the path of least resistance you better become a stooge/henchman of one of the insecure directors in the company and ensure your job safety. 5. High burn out rates - Frequent reorgs and manager changes are the hallmark of this company. I had 6 different managers in my first 6 months here and moved across 3 teams. Not counting countless meaningless projects I did.

    Advice to Management

For once try to let go of your ego and fire all the director and above guys and get to a fresh start if you have the spine to do so. You are all stuck in your echo chambers and feel comfortable every morning seeing AMZN stock rise and patting yourself on the back. Your work has absolutely no contribution on the rise of AMZN stocks. All the senior management is stuck in their "happy place" conspiring against each... other with their henchmen and eating mac n cheese. Remember getting too comfortable eating mac n cheese will one day block your arteries. Look into the grievances of employees who have left your org. Audible is a great product made decades back for once come out of your comfortable echo chambers and weed out the parasites in the company. All clues lie in the exit interviews of hard working disgruntled employees who got burnt.

    Pros

    - Free lunch - Weekly happy hour - Gym/commuting reimbursement - Amazon RSU - Some really smart and helpful people but it's hard to seek them out in a very political culture

    Cons

    - Lack of visionary product leaders - High turnover - Constant change in strategy from upper management - Lack of transparency given the hierarchal org structure - HR is not to be trusted with any concerns or bullying you might experience - No clear career path and very random/inconsistent promotions based on relationships rather than metrics and output - Internal transfer policy can be improved, Google... I worked at Audible

    Pros

Free lunch on Wednesdays and beers on Fridays was nice. The product is very unique and the content is very exciting. Something for everyone. Being an extension of Amazon was a benefit sometimes as you could take advantage of highly qualified inventory on the website. It is a good company to have on your CV if you are a newly qualified graduate as there aren't many very senior people with technical industry... experience in the company, so it is not hard to bridge the gap once you're in the company.

    Cons

Lots of in-fighting between senior managers which made it difficult to work with other teams. Everything is approved via the US, therefore the London and Berlin offices have no real autonomy. External agencies treated like pests rather than treated and respected as extensions of the Audible UK team. This is no way to manage agencies. Assumption from US management that the UK market should deliver the same... performance as the US despite the US being a vastly bigger market. Heads of marketing not technical at all which causes them to agree to wildly unachievable targets. Highly skilled contractors treated like third class employees despite having more training, more technical knowledge and more experience than the admin heavy management teams. No support or training given to employees who politely ask for cost effective training options. Poor work life balance contributes to high level of burnout and stress among employees.

    Advice to Management

Hire staff with decent industry experience - whether marketing or product or IT. Don't just depend on liking candidates based on superficial judgements. Hire managers who know how to motivate staff, not just managers who want an enormous pay packet.

I worked at Audible full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Amazon pretty much the most happening place in tech, decent pay, free lunch, bonus in stocks which have a major upside. Some extremely smart data scientists to work with.

    Cons

This company has become the country club of short sighted selfish leadership, who encourage a "yes man" culture. If you are an out of the box thinker this may not be the place for you. Rampant politics and backstabbing happens here. In case you want a future career in politics and want to run for office or want to be the next Gaius Julius Caesar this is the place. The teams that run the business and on the key... strategic aspects has an army of incompetent people who only prefer to engage in politics and step over the shoulders of hard working folks and move to the next level. Really pathetic HR team and immigration related support. If you really want to hurt your path to permanent residency you are in the right place. Things get delayed by years just because the immigration support is so lackadaisical. The leadership is absolutely blind to a long term strategy and vision for the company. All they want into hoard more stocks for the next year and play the game of oneupmanship. I have come across lots of people making big decisions here who cannot add a few cells in a spreadsheet yet walk around with so much air of their big positions and titles. The technology/engineering and analysts teams are the worst sufferers. They are treated like second class human beings on good days and like doormats on most days of the year. Projects are dropped like when they are 80% done and again they are tasked on something else that's equally likely to fail. In short in terms of innovation and strategy Audible cannot hold a candle in front of its parent company yet encourage people to hold them in the same regard. Another dangerous cultural problem here is the minion culture. Every director and above have their inner circle of minions who hang out with them, make them look good in their own eyes and sing praises of them. These minions are the real terror of this company the unproductive middle managers who just terrorize the worker bees and mould them into future minions.

    Advice to Management

Show some spine and let go of your own minions who are destroying the company. Talk to people 2-3 level below you and find out their grievances. Kick out the snobbish good for nothing losers who have filled your ranks. The middle management will destroy this company and you will end up as a case study 10 years down the line.

I worked at Audible full-time for more than a year

    Pros

RSUs, free food, apparent appearance of a tech start up. audiobook account is a great plus. Protective cover of AMZN so paycheck comes on time. It ends here - question is if money in the short term with no growth opportunity are your only drivers in life be a guest here.

    Cons

Too much politics, senior leadership too arbitrary and hellbent on bringing their incapable stooges in the middle management position. No career growth unless you are part of this politics. You have to learn the art of flattering your boss laugh at his stupid jokes - this is the only ticket to a career trajectory. I have seen so many able people just languish in frustration here that there seems to be no word of... comfort. Not sure who runs this company - too much reorg if any outsider or people well versed in Organizational dynamics saw this place they would label it a disaster. The HR here is one of the worst departments a. they are trained very well to low ball you offer you the worst possible deal b. if you need any immigration related help - may god bless you because all your process is handled by just one immigration Point of Contact who literally toys with every lever in your application and files so that might be of something anyone who is on a visa should consider and vet things in more detail This company used to stand for something and had a vision for the greater good, sadly it's all been flushed down the sewers by the incapable senior management that is running the place. There is blatant discrimination in performance evaluation. A person working in tech will most likely be evaluated by a person who can't tell the difference between software and tableware. Initially during the salary negotiations the recruiters will lowball you and say this is is the best offer we have for you if you don't accept we will blacklist you for good from anywhere in amazon for life. Projects are shelved in midway and end of the year they will say - you didn't have any deliverable for the year and zero business impact so no raise or you are fired depending on which side of the bed the supervisor has gotten off that day. The supervisors will say there are no set goals since we are a start up yet at the end of the year some fictitious goals will appear out of thin air and you will be judged against them.

    Advice to Management

Stop fixing Newark, start fixing the company. Learn to listen - audible is a company that inspires people to listen more to quality audiobooks. Time you started listening to your own people who earlier would have taken a bullet for Audible. Teach the HR and the senior management to have basic empathy.

    Pros

Free lunch, Restricted Stock Units .... it ends here

    Cons

Crony culture, management with absolutely no idea who is in charge or direction. Almost in every group the stooges of the big bosses run the show and they are little totalitarian dictators in the making. Your voice, ideas will almost always be crushed. And yes every word of the NY times article on amazon is true and applies here as well. I have seen it myself pretty much every single day. The moment even something... minor happens to you health-wise the Big Bosses of your group get ready to flush you drown the toilet bowl blessed by their HR stooges. The culture here is getting rotten from within everyday.

    Advice to Management

If you think drones and robots can run your company better start hiring drones and robots and not Humans. Humans have different needs trust me. Keep like 10% of your cronies the rest can be managed by robots/drones. Also decide who is in charge at the top.
