I have been working at Arup full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great network of staff, locally and globally, ability to network and create new opportunities within Arup, great learning and development opportunities

    Cons

Limited structure to groups and ways of working - doesn’t suit all. Large organization, easy to look and explore things internally without external and market face

I have been working at Arup full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There is a genuine interest in investing in staff. Independent research is often funded, lots of in-house and external training opportunities provided. The company motto, 'shaping a better world' is taken quite seriously - fair amount of funding for community initiatives.

    Cons

A bubble mentality dominates among staff (only things developed at Arup matter), likely because the typical Arup staffer starts as a graduate and does not leave until retirement. Career growth opportunities are limited. Support to those joining mid-career is almost non-existent.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to retain skilled and ambitious staff

I have been working at Arup full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Culture of learning and research, innovation, flat structure/lack of hierarchy, some smart people, perks as an employee owned company (travel, profit share, overseas assignments, learning/skills development), positive culture (warm people)

    Cons

Poor implementation of business strategy, not a meritocracy (mediocre employees retained and often promoted at expense of others), a culture of 'doing your time', rather than promotion on merit, overly traditional in many respects particularly in larger engineering parts of business (e.g. buildings, infrastructure engineering), unsophisticated business processes, navel gazing (company likes to think about itself too... much, at expense of thinking about market), lower wages compared to competitors

I have been working at Arup

    Pros

    Very collegiate and creative organisation

    Cons

Slow decision making and abdication of responsibility by some Managers. Also a lack of recognition that in a diverse organisation, people act and think in different ways

    Advice to Management

Act like leaders! Be appreciative of all forms of social and public recognition. Allow more free expression and creativity. Don't be afraid or closed to constructive challenge
