I have been working at Appway full-time

    Pros

Nice office and decent work-life balance since managers are so incompetent they cannot organize the flow of work to keep you busy. (but be prepared to work on useless stuff).

    Cons

There is no learning opportunity at all, the technologies are creepy, old and badly implemented. Manager at every level do not care about people and do not have enough experience to lead the teams. HR is incapable to retain people and an inverse selection process is making the best leave and the old, incompetent developers/manager stay. In other words this is the worst choice you could make as an engineer, this company is a career killer. CTO is just a knick-knack.

I have been working at Appway full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Initially I thought the flexibility, but now I'm fed up of that too

    Cons

The CEO of this company has a twisted vision of reality: he wants to sell to other IT companies their products, implying that they somehow know better than the other IT companies. The funny thing is that Appway is beyond industry standards in every aspect. The codebase has been written by coding school dropouts and would need heavy refactoring/rewriting but nobody wants to take that responsibility. The quality is very low and teams spend a lot of their time fixing urgent issues. On top of that, the culture is really terrible, people talks a lot behind your back and are not afraid to put you at shame in front of higher management. Finally and probably the biggest issue is that they want to play the Champions League with the same people they had when they played in Third or Fourth League. These people, despite being considered as gods by management, are not capable to bring the company forward. Additionally they are afraid of new comers as these could hinder their careers and will not hesitate to diminish their work and to take an hyper-defensive approach to the awful current situation (in a few occasions, they have pushed that people who came from outside and were trying to change things would be fired or somehow forced to leave).

We're sorry to hear you don’t feel challenged in the right way at Appway – it would be very helpful and constructive if you discussed your concerns directly with one of the leads. As our success stories and broad client base show, we have become a well-respected and a successful player in the software platform business, which is typically a space taken by big(ger) players. Platform business comes with a different set of challenges than the usual end-user software: while providing innovative new platform capabilities, we also must ensure backwards compatibility and smooth upgrades of existing client solutions for each end every platform release. Therefore, architecture and technology decisions need to be wisely taken and well-thought through and based on cost-benefit analysis. And we have been continuously improving to keep our technology stack up to date.

    Pros

Some good learnings about how not to run a company which you could use for your future career.

    Cons

A narcissistic CEO and a clownish CTO who only care about themselves: as a consequence everybody is just a number to them. Meritocracy is a completely alien concept to the organisation: you'll be promoted only if you become their pet, results don't matter. This has created the "little kingdom of incompetence": a layer of untalented, abusive and arrogant middle managers who have lost any interest for people and only care about their careers (which is logic as they could never land similar roles in any company where they would be judged by their value). Unsurprisingly, the final result is a buggy and hardly-usable product, and a toxic working environment. Finally, don't fall for any of the positive reviews, in fact the CEO, instead of trying to solve the many issues, has requested employees to go and write positive reviews on Glassdoor (trying to fix the symptoms instead of the real problem, a pattern you'll see very often at Appway).

    Pros

Friendly team. Good group of folks, for the most part.

    Cons

Horrible management. No one knows what they are doing or what is going on, right down to the CEO. Very little to no communication. No one really cares to know what your thoughts or concerns are.

I worked at Appway full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Dynamic, minimal politics, good work-life balance, business is doing well CEO is nice and approachable, and coworkers are young and friendly Expert in a niche market

    Cons

Limited growth & learning, middle-management mostly are not qualified and don’t know what they are doing. Very Zurich-centric and if you are not Swiss German, it might be difficult to get your messages through. Lack of professional senior managers who knows how to operate and run a company that’s no longer a startup, which has outgrown the founder/CEO. Product is no evolving nearly as fast as necessary, which could be due to the fact that the CEO/founder is the only person in charge / have the say about the product strategy. Pay is average but there is a cap (eg 1-month) on bonus, minimal other benefits and no profit-sharing whatsoever

I worked at Appway full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Among the many positive things I have experienced at Appway the working environment is definitively the one that I appreciate the most. The founders' passion for building a company where it is fun and stimulating to work, is entirely reflected in Appway. Upon joining Appway, I was amazed how many smart and talented colleagues I was working with. In the last decade, the company was able to gather a genuine dream team.

    Cons

Appway is a relatively young company still undergoing the process of defining the ideal organizational structure. This implies frequent organisational changes. Personally, I like this aspect, since every turn brings new opportunities to learn and grow with the company. However, I understand it can also be destabilizing for many.

    Work life balance. Nice people

    Cons

Domain is boooooooooooooring. Looks like a ship without captain (especially technology wise). Not all the top star reviews you read here actually represent reality: be suspicious about the ones that just mention the nice office, the coffee machine or the "growth". These are just honey traps.

Nothing as of now except the CEO

    Cons

    - Extremely poor wages even with good turnover - All of good senior management recently quit after being treated badly - Constantly changing management - New management trying to treat the employees as "school students" - Trying to force unnecessary policies on the employees - Current new management in NY is forcing their decision on employees

Hello, We are sorry to hear you had a negative experience while working with us. However, contrary to your review, we’ve recently completely renovated our entire New York City office and continue to invest in the team by adding new openings. We strongly believe in providing our employees the chance to advance within the company to leadership roles, and with that can come some growing pains too. We are far from shutting this office down, but can appreciate you voicing your concern and wish you the best in your next role.
