    Pros

TEAM: Amazing people work at ApplyBoard. This has been the best part of my experience here- the reason I was/am happy to go to work every day. I cannot stress this enough. No doubt there’s a lot of work and great challenges every single day, but the unity among the teams is unbelievable. The company is thriving because of all the hardwork these people put in! CULTURE: ApplyBoard has a great work culture. The work is fast-paced and opportunities of growth are endless. If you put in real efforts, they don’t go unnoticed. You’ll grow faster than in most other bigger companies. Diversity is celebrated, new ideas are appreciated. Everyone is cared for, especially during this unpredictable time due to the pandemic, we have emerged out to be stronger than ever. LEADERSHIP: The C-suite of the company is extremely passionate, so much so that it is infectious! The CEO might not be the best orator, but his devotion to his mission is apparent, his talks are motivating and his care for the team looks genuine. Everyone in the leadership team leads by example and are super approachable. You can see how they have grown as managers, are ready to learn from one another and are open to changes- I guess that is the secret of their success. It is very important to mention how quickly they responded to the Covid situation and took swift action on WFH for employee safety. They have made a conscious effort to stay connected to all the employees and that has been well received in the company. We actually feel like a family together. INNOVATION: ApplyBoard is true to its description of a “tech” company. They are ready to lead the path and innovate. They dare to take the risk and don’t believe in blindly following what others do. Things are so dynamic, even if you work here for a few months, I guarantee you will not be able to recognize how things were done when you first started.

    Cons

SALARY: No matter how much one appreciates the company, it’s growth and culture- there’s no denying the fact that people are under-compensated (for most roles). When employees serve you with their heart and soul, they deserve better returns. Reasons like- "oh! we're paying based on industry averages" or "we're still a startup" or "we are not in GTA" are lame and not appreciated by any of the employees. Additionally, it comes out as rude when the CEO comes up(at one of the all company meetings) and explains why we shouldn’t feel “entitled” to earning more. Well, if you make more money with more funding, each one who spends a greater part of their day working for your company should too! As I already mentioned, people who work at ApplyBoard are AMAZING and very hard-working and definitely deserve to be paid more! COMPANY STRUCTURE: The company grew so quick that they didn’t get a chance to catch their breath and define clear processes. Since it’s no longer a start-up, it needs to work more efficiently on laying down lucid methodologies and refining processes. Extreme changes in how things work can put off people who are used to working in better managed environments.

I have been working at ApplyBoard full-time

    Pros

The people are passionate, driven and hard working. I have never worked with a better team.

    Cons

The bigger the company gets, the more good ideas get ignored or forgotten. Upper management doesn't listen to the people doing the hands on work every day. Pay is getting better but still low. Very high expectations for low compensation

I have been working at ApplyBoard full-time for more than a year

    Pros

First off, unlike many other companies I've worked at, this is a company with a noble mission. Working here makes me feel like I'm contributing to the greater good of the world. It sounds cliche, but even the promotion of international diversity alone is enough to get me excited about this mission even if it had nothing to do with education. Second, this is a company with unique founders who have a great story to tell and who have proven time after time that you can find opportunity in the face of the biggest adversities. I've gotten to personally know Martin, the CEO, just through ApplyBoard and so rarely have I seen anyone think like him. Unique energy all around! Third, this is a company that has actually proven success. As a former entrepreneur and founder, I know how hard it is to start a company, validate a business model, find market fit, and scale up. They've done exactly that. Tremendous growth in so little time. For me personally, it's been inspiring to see how a start-up turns into a scale-up so fast. Among other unique qualities of this company is the transparency and trust they show their employees, the many experienced leaders they have and most importantly the vast number of opportunities they have available. As a member of the engineering team, I can say there is no shortage of exciting, game-changing projects at any given time. For the motivated person, getting involved into any one of these projects is a real possibility.

    Cons

This company has gotten to 500 people in just 5 years. They have growing pains. Not everything is as streamlined as it should be and that can be frustrating for people who need 100% clarity in what they should be doing - that's an opportunity for people who strive in this kind of environment though. There's A LOT to be done and expectations are very high. Yes, there's opportunities here, but you have to earn it. Effort alone won't cut it. Results are what count. It can be a challenging environment but it's the perfect culture for people who really want to grow. If you want to be relaxed at your job, you probably won't be happy here, at least as a senior engineer or leader. It's a double-edge sword, but you pick your battles and do what's right for you.

I have been working at ApplyBoard full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Number one for me personally, is knowing that your hard work is benefiting real humans all over the world struggling to improve their own life as well as the lives of their families. ApplyBoard is easily the most diverse team I have ever worked with. You almost never meet anyone with the same background as yourself, it's absolutely incredible. Along with that, the thing I was most surprised about when I joined was the lack of politics. ApplyBoard has done a great job in selecting people based on their wholehearted agreement with the mission and for specific character traits like humility and kindness. I'm constantly surprised with how in sync everyone is. We are growing so quickly that there is a constant influx of new opportunities that you can take on if you are ambitious and hardworking. Most company leadership pay lip service to ideas like meritocracy. I have only been here a short while but have already seen more examples of this actually happening at ApplyBoard than I have in all my previous positions & companies.

    Cons

The company is growing fast and so a lot is changing. This constant and rapid change brings with it uncertainty, which can be uncomfortable to some. If you are a person who wants to show up at 10am and leave at 5pm, this is not a position for you. We are trying to change lives and want people on the team that want to do the same.

I worked at ApplyBoard full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I worked at the company for almost two years and saw it grow from 100 employees to more than 500. There are some really great people working on their teams. And there is a sense of small communities amongst different departments. Many times I asked for help from other teams and they were a delight to work with. Very hard working and kind.

    Cons

The founders do not care about the people who work at the company. They pretend to but they have disrespected people (even loyal people who have been there for years). They will talk over people and yell at them in front of the whole company. Martin, the CEO, holds monthly "vision meetings" where he talks about himself for 2 hours. They are NOT transparent about anything. And when questioned they give politician answers. The company's moral was always polled post these meetings and it was always very low. People are scared to stand up to the brothers because they have seen them yell at their staff in demanding ways. Even after their staff have worked long hours for weeks. Management is a complete disaster. I was happy to see the founding brothers having mentors to help with how they talk to people but it's still not enough. The word around the company was that everyone hopes the investor board will kick Martin off. He's not trustworthy and they hire a bunch of management that is only there to please Martin. They don't care about their employees and will walk all over them. Like I said, I worked there for nearly 2 years and saw this daily. So much of their staff has a pay divide. The over pay a bunch of made-up titles for managers that don't actually do any work. Their customer experience team and software work double time. CX hardly gets the benefits for it since their pay is so low and their overtime hours only clock in after a couple hours. Three Labour Ministry even flagged them once for inappropriate working hours for their staff. The founders will not change or do anything for their employee benefit. When asked about better benefits and RSP matching, Martin replied that if they save on that "everyone will be rich." Which basically means him. They had almost 30 people leave the company in early 2020. HR tried to cover it up and told those people who were leaving that they couldn't say goodbye to their colleagues. It was all kept secret. Additionally, in multiple departments, there was employees who were harassed after giving their two weeks notice in. So much that the founders wouldn't stop calling them and making it seem as though they couldn't leave. I lost respect for this company. I have referred dozens of people in my network to this company, and I do not see the same respect given back to their team. Their investors need to take a closer look at how they are running their company.

    I worked at ApplyBoard full-time

    Pros

    - Extreme amounts of growth, if you work here you'll probably be reminded at every monthly meeting or at every department meeting - Young co-workers who are easy to get along with

    Cons

    - Engineering department is highly bureaucratic, you'll be quickly reminded who runs the show as seniority is key, not being senior means that you have no permissions whatsoever on testing or production pipelines, want your stuff that you have been working on for sprints to be merged? Give it a few months and it might be considered - Ideas have to go through a whole army of seniors and executives - Poor management, managers have no clue what their doing and as an employee you will often get the massive amount of blame when a project which has no roadmap or goal isn't done - Management doesn't trust or listen to teams, they hear great ideas and say they care when brought up by team members however never act upon their promises - Highly reactive instead of proactive environment, your entire project may literally change on a weekly basis because of an aspect that was ignored resulting in nothing ever being done - Evident that many team members are overworked, resulting in lots of burnout, stress and anxiety among teams - Mental health and employee wellbeing are brought up but are never acted upon, you're expected to work work work work fostering a toxic workplace culture - No worklife balance - Do what you're told - Compensation is low for what you're expected to do
