    I worked at AppNeta

    Pros

Beer, ping-pong, open office space, music, and most people are friendly.

    Cons

Unstable, poor management, HIGH turnover. You never know, you could be next... Management will act like they care about you but they really don't AKA fake! One day their hiring, the next they're firing. Be ready to walk on eggshells.

    Advice to Management

Take a management class or 5! Figure out what you're doing so employees don't suffer ups and downs. Maybe turnover would be lower but I guess you don't care.

I have been working at AppNeta

    Pros

Great company culture, employees are great to work with, nice approachable management and plenty of freebees, generous days off and benefits. Management frequently allows for early days before long weekends and days off after a great quarter. There is a lot of openness on the state of the company.

    Cons

I'm guessing this is common in start ups but there is a high turnover rate. I think employees in other positions besides sales should have opportunities to earn bonuses.

    Advice to Management

I would work to find out why so many people are leaving. I think opening sales up to being able to work remotely would greatly increase the interest and hiring of sales people. Rewarding employees for great work or projects with bonuses is also a great motivator.

    I worked at AppNeta full-time

    Pros

Really really easy HR process. If you need a placeholder job right out of college that will just barely allow you to survive in Boston while you find something more legit, this is the way to go as long as you don't have very high standards or self-respect. From what I remember, they were growing kinda fast? Also, the products they sell are solid.

    Cons

Where to start. 12 hour days are the standard and they pay you on average $35k/ year. If you do the math it's basically McDonalds pay. They have implemented all of the least sophisticated, high pressure, low cost, high turnover sales practices developed in the technology space. It's more or less a sweatshop full of college educated kids making 150-200 dials per day and reading from a script riddled with... grammatical errors. Pretty brutal. They openly admit that they "hire fast and fire fast". Very ineffective way to built a strong company and cultivate a healthy culture. I left within months of working there for a better firm which is par for the course.

    Advice to Management

I recommend that Bain fire all of the upper management and replace them with bona fide sales professionals who understand how to scale an organization in a sustainable way.

    Pros

Gaining the knowledge that if these incompetent and delusional people can be executives, then there is no doubt I will one day get there myself.

    Cons

Where to begin: don’t let the fact that Bain invested $16 million in this company or that SolarWinds, another Bain company, the company they were supposedly competing against and whose product they constantly trashed on, also invested in them fool you- there is a reason why no new investors have come on board. Zero continuity within the organization. Every department does things their own way, since management... has no set processes in place. This is a major reason why the company is losing money and why customers routinely churn. If you have a pulse, you will get hired. Recent college grads make up the majority of the sales floor. Most of them are only there for a paycheck, and don’t put in any real work. This, combined with NO training and NO guidance by management = the company not hitting its number. This should not be happening, especially having technology that is actually pretty good. They frown upon you having an opinion. It’s called a “start up”, but if you have an opinion of your own and express any sort of dissatisfaction to the wrong person, you will get ratted on. Two grown men cannot have a conversation regarding major changes that were taking place without one of them getting over sensitive about the truth and crying about it to the VP. If you are a robot with no sense of self worth, this is the place for you. Marketing is comprised of a handful of rich and spoiled 20 somethings who come in after 10, leave at 4 and take an hour and a half lunch break. Seeing them at their desk is a rarity, and when they are they spend their time either on Facebook or not distributing the “leads” that come in through 3rd, 4th, and 10th party websites who have no idea AppNeta exists. Commissions are not always paid on time, and management will constantly try to find ways NOT to pay them in full. As it turns out, the smartest people at AppNeta are the several who quit after a week because, in their words, “this place sucks”. Extremely high turnover on all levels, especially in sales. They place no value on employees who actually care and are willing to put the work in. I challenge anyone who interviews there to bring any of these things up. They will either A. Try to get around the topic, or B. Say that the opinions of one person do not reflect the company. The truth is these are the feelings of both current and former employees. If you need further proof, look at any one of the sales people in the eye- they will remind you of a neglected dog from an ASPCA commercial. Everyone is miserable, but they stay because A. “it’s a paycheck”, or B. they hope things will get better.

    Pros

Great people who work hard in roles of BDR and SE. Sales model is innovative, fast-paced and gets results. Those who are willing to work hard can make substantial pay in just a short time out of college. High energy environment and office perks are unmatched.

    Cons

Training of new BDRs is virtually non-existent, leading to high turnover. Management sees "hire fast/fire fast" as a strategic advantage, not the symptom of high churn that it is.

    Advice to Management

Ridiculously high turnover at the executive level is perplexing. Seemingly good people with lots of experience seem to last less than one year, and even when hitting numbers are let go with no announcement or explanation to the company. Coincidence that execs vest in stock after one year? Be very careful if you're looking at a management team role here. Talk to former execs.

    Pros

    - The product appears to have a good amount of R&D behind it. - Fulfills a market need. - If you last it could be an opportunity into sales. Keep in mind that if you only last a quarter or two you probably won't look very appealing to other companies.

    Cons

    - No work/life balance. - High turnover. - Very minimal sales training. - High stress.

    Advice to Management

Everything seems to be in place (product, engineering, and marketing) except for the sales model. No talented sales professional will stick around with such a high turnover rate, and no work/life balance.
