I worked at American Apparel full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very easy to get promoted if you have the right look and are willing to put in more than the bare minimum. Seriously, just not being caught stealing counts as performing above-average.

    Cons

Pretty much no training, no benefits, low compensation. Your peers are not the ambitious type.

    Advice to Management

    Get it together

I worked at American Apparel full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

American Apparel prides itself with promoting from within, therefore climbing up the ranks is fairly easy. There is a wide variety of positions available to choose from whether it be sales, backstock, merchandising or management. Employees have the opportunity to move up within the company and take on larger roles in the corporate office.

    Cons

There can be many people in upper management that lack real experience and at times be incompetent with the role they have. Many were promoted based off of false skills and appearance

    Advice to Management

Hire people with real experience, not because of convenience

I worked at American Apparel full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

great discount, when the team you are on is great (visual manager, merchandiers) the job can be fufilling and workload is rational. Great discount, company visual directive is not heavily enforced so you have creative freedom to work with your visual manager for display ideas and product placement, a pro I have not experienced anywhere else. Travel opportunities.

    Cons

Work life balance is awful, 16 hour shifts are the norm, on call on weekends, managers contact you even when you have a day off after working multiple overnights. Corporate is unreal, their reputation isnt from false accusations, this is carried down to store managers and district managers as well.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees like humans and please have HR workshops to train senior management.

I have been working at American Apparel full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Getting free clothes is the best part. That's what most people stay for.

    Cons

In store Management is power struck, doesn't do what is asked of employees. HQ doesn't respond to your in store issues. District managers does not respond to you when you reach out. Growth in company is hard since bankruptcy.

    Advice to Management

Understand what is going on in store. Issues are being over looked, and stores are turning into sweatshops.
