I worked at Algonquin Power & Utilities full-time

    Pros

Decent pay. Good pipeline of projects.

    Cons

Incredibly political. Horrible management. Tight inner circle of buddies that have been there for a couple of decades. Things are done their way, and if you dare to question or suggest anything otherwise - you will be ostracized, yelled at and downright bullied and abused. Don't worry - they do it not only because you're new - they treat their buddies the same. I've seen an employee of 20 years turning pale and shaking while being interrogated by a VP about a manageable project risk item. I thought he was gonna have a heart attack right there and felt incredibly uncomfortable seeing this, it was like a drunken abusive parent yelling at their child. You will inevitably end up entangled in some power struggle between the Directors and VPs with no way out. If you're used to open communication and collaboration - you won't last because you simply will not be able to filter your communication to avoid some Manager thinking that you are trying to undermine them and they will act accordingly and they will stab you in the back when you least expect it. You will not be able to use any of your prior experience, as your job will be reduced to running between various offices, trying to get a decision made and then running again to get everyone to approve it formally. You will only be able to get anything done and any decisions made at your level while some other bigger project is tanking and all Management eyes are on it, so they leave you alone for a bit. Project Controls are non-existent and Management don't even understand how projects should be budgeted, planned, controlled and executed, but get extremely defensive, downright violent, when you suggest to make something better based on your outside experience. Hey, they've been doing it for the last 30 years, who are you to tell them that there could be a way to improve it? Management would rather spend a lot of time and effort trying to guess what their Superiors need to hear than just sit down for 5 minutes to set the expectations. One particular report has been redone almost every day for 5 weeks, taking up resources and time, instead of just sitting down for 10 minutes to have an open conversation, and developing a template from the start, as the team originally suggested.

I worked at Algonquin Power & Utilities full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Salary is good as HR did their due dil to remain competitive within market. Flexibility on place and hours of work is invaluable. Some good people, and open door to executives allow for good exposure if you get a chance/will.

    Cons

Level of politics among middle management is horrible. Turnover is constantly high, often unexplained and just replacing people for obscure reason.
