I worked at Alberta Health Services part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-Easy to transfer between positions and locations once in the organization -Unionized (UNA) -Competitive pay and nurse-patient ratio (relative to other provinces)

    Cons

-Difficult to get into organization- always having "hiring freeze", need to know someone to arrange interview with unit managers to have resume looked at -Very top down management style (frontline workers have limited impact on decision making) -Very middle management heavy organization -Most budget cuts come from cutting frontline staff (managers get bonuses for making unit budgets) -Nurse-patient ratios are decreasing (used to be standard 1-4 on days, now standard is 1-5/1-6)

    Advice to Management

Stop cutting frontline staff to save middle management positions. Cuts to the frontline should be the absolute last option. Why are there managers managing two unit managers? Too many "fluff policy" managers, stop pushing for "game changing policies" if you can't get the basics in order. Cutting nurses and nursing attendants is harming patients and burning out qualified staff. AHS needs an internal audit to clean up the excess of middle management and administrative positions for the sake of the tax payer and patients wellbeing.
