I have been working at Abell Pest Control full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I arrived to Canada 12 years ago, I had the opportunity to start my career @ Abell, great people, very supportive team, At Abell you get the chance to work in a big company that's family owned, where you are valued as a person and you can contribute, where they respect you as a professional, you can grow as much as you want, as its commonly known the sky is the limit, Pest control @Abell is a hidden golden mine... where you can have fun while you are working and helping customers giving solutions.

I worked at Abell Pest Control full-time

    Pros

    1. They consistently provide lunch or birthday cake/special events to boost moral for their employees. Usually every few weeks or so. 2. They have short work days usually 8 hours with a lunch unless you’re in the field. 3. They usually close down for a few days around Christmas which is nice if you have some banked vacation hours to give yourself a long stretch of days off. 4. It is a family company so if they... like you they will definitely treat you well. Very understanding of personal issues or time off requests.

    Cons

    1. You’re lucky if you get a performance review done yearly, not that it matters since they don't give raises. Except apparently their 1% cost of living increase that nobody even notices. However, they do have a Presidents Club (opportunity for a bonus) for outstanding sales but the stats are incredibly difficult to achieve and not everyone is eligible. You will never know if tomorrow they'll walk you out the door.... 2. No room for advancement. The company operates like a pyramid/ponzi scheme that keeps adding more grunts/route managers to the bottom but never seems to split and offer any new opportunities. This is the true for all branches. The entire company hierarchy is a bottle neck of 5 or so top managers in there various areas and they all refuse to retire or move over which basically prevents any room for advancement anywhere. The sad part is, neither of these 5 individuals will ever reach the top themselves because there will always be an "Abell" who wakes up one day and decides they want to play pest control with the "family" business. 5. They operate on a pay structure that is completely unheard of and probably has been in place since the company started in 1924. Two pay cheques on the same days each month. So if it falls on a holiday weekend you get paid early which means you have to struggle longer between checks. This includes the Christmas holidays (because they close down) and then you get to survive with no money and all your Christmas bills piling up for close to an entire month before being paid again. It's a magical time.

    Advice to Management

    1. Provide more opportunities for growth and advancement or you will continue training individuals who will then take everything they have learned from you and will either start working at a competitor or will simply go out on their own and start a competing pest control company. 2. Take some of the money that the managers would spend on a monthly basis driving their "Company Vehicles" and spend it on your... employees for once so they can afford their bills or groceries. A real pay increase for doing a good job, not lunch (performance reviews occurring more than once every 3 years and that actually mean something would be a good start). No one needs their Audi or Lexus or oversized SUV replaced every 6 months so they can drive 5 minutes down the road. A Toyota Camry will also get you from A to B. We notice these things. 3. Pay your staff every 2 weeks like a normal company would. Your current structure is only to your benefit.

I worked at Abell Pest Control full-time

    Pros

Vehicle Use,being given a geographical area to deal with

    Cons

overworked and still expected to cover for those who get 6-7 weeks of vacation a year while still expected to be making sales which there is no time to service

    Advice to Management

Focus on customer service not sales totals. New accounts mean nothing if current ones are not being serviced properly

I have been working at Abell Pest Control full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Best pest control company around if you're passionate about what you do. Take on as much work as you want and build relationships to create sales and extra commission. Great support from the CEO right down to the technician working beside you on a job. Treated fairly and know what you're getting paid

    Cons

Not a good place if you don't love what you do.

    Advice to Management

Incompetent technicians should be reprimanded and dismissed more frequently in order to protect the integrity of the Abell brand

I worked at Abell Pest Control full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

You can make a lot of money if you out in big hours. Perks include company truck, benefits and vacation (if you actually manage to take time off)

    Cons

Unrealistic expectations from management; inconsistent instructions from management; foolish agendas and campaigns from head office that waste time; managers expect you to do the quickest work possible and sacrifice quality; employees who do well in sales can pretty much get away with murder; I could go on, but why bother.

    Advice to Management

They already know what they need to fix - they just won't.
