I worked at ATCO Electric full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Some good people still remain

    Cons

The accounting leadership is almost completely incompetent. They don’t even have a basic understanding of how to manage people, and think nothing of having employees work 10-15 OT hours a week on tasks with no value. Since accountants are not paid overtime, the company makes no effort to use their time efficiently or even give the appearance that their time has value. Most of upper management lacks “front-line” experience, but are so convinced of their own superiority they refuse to consider that someone else, especially a subordinate, may have valuable insight or experience. Your job is to shut up and do what you are told even if it’s wrong or there is a better way to do the task. Employee behaviours that would be considered negative virtually anywhere else are encouraged and rewarded at ATCO. If you want to get ahead, you need to think of yourself first at the expense of the people you work with.

I have been working at ATCO Electric

    Pros

Where do I start. I am a proud Albertan and have worked with the company for over 20 years. I have always been proud to work for ATCO, proud to be part of a family. I have always ignored the fact that execs get massive bonuses and are short sighted with their decisions. My family has relied on ATCO for many years to put food on our table. November was one of the worst months on my life. Hundreds of co-workers were let go and I fear our leaders just saw line items on spreadsheets. In fact, that's all they saw. Decisions made in offices with fireplaces isn't always good out in the field to us who support the core business of what ATCO does well. Many good people were let go in November where other Utilities hired. All executive STILL got bonuses and raises and employees received nothing. We were told this week that what happened in November was actually our fault. It would seem that ATCO has lost touch of what modern day leadership is all about. No longer does a leader sit in the penthouse and collect copious amounts of money. No longer does a business try to redefine itself over and over again, rather than focusing on core customer services. Do leaders really deserve millions upon millions of salary and stocks when they lay of 15% of their talent. I am sorry but ATCO is not what it was.....This business is only about making money and TSX value.

    Cons

See above please my comments about the ATCO.

I have been working at ATCO Electric full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There is room for advancement in the department. I have learned a lot in the last 5 years. Good work life balance with a good supervisor. Many good people work for the company.

    Cons

Some hard working people released during staff reductions. Confusing messages or no communication at all from senior management. Seems like no one is piloting the ship.

I worked at ATCO Electric full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Friendly environment, place to learn and grow. easy to move to interested position. relocation policy is satisfactory

    Cons

Now the company is shrinking. they don't disclose salary range for positions. you don't know what your next position's salary range, which is a motivator for some employee. Now a days they are cutting cost, laid of good people. Not a good place to move in.

I have been working at ATCO Electric full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Interesting work with a good people at lower levels. a few very good team leads made it through the layoffs.

    Cons

Very corporate, minimal room for error and large blitz style layoffs. Top down style of leadership stems all the way to corporate. room for advancement is almost non-existent if you are not a favorite. very demanding, with minimal for work/life balance.

I worked at ATCO Electric full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

A company with huge potential, a few good people left after the very poorly handled blood letting.

    Cons

They just took out way to many good people and leaders that balanced the scale between nasty leadership and leaders who actually worked and communicated to their people. They have reverted back at least 20 years in their cultural growth. All that's left are the leaders who micro manage, bully, intimidate and will continue to drive the business down. ATCO Group isn't much better, poor leadership right from the top, micro management, bullying and intimidation won't create innovation, new business or a good place to work for the next several years. If you get a job offer from any of the ATCO organizations, run in the other direction and fast. They do not live to their core values nor do they care about their people. Sad story about what once was a very good company, shame on the Board, CEO, Presidents and Officers for poor leadership and vision, good thing its a family owned business because if it was anywhere else these people wouldn't have jobs!
