Long term outlook and leadership concerns

    Pros

Most people at Alula mean well, are very smart, and have great ideas.

    Cons

New CEO and leadership transition and it’s messy. Lack of solid offers, doesn’t practice what is preached, too reactive, lack of ability to retain diverse talent, and lack of trust and overall culture.

    Good company with good people.

    Pros

27+ year success story; focused on growth and profitability.

    Cons

3-year vesting for 401k match, inclusive of 1-year period of no-match. ESOP requires 3-year vesting period too. Overall revenue of firm dependent on one marquee client.

What once was a good, even great, place to work has become a terrible place in which to work - thanks to our Sr Leaders!

Nov. 29, 2010 - Consultant in Pittsburgh, PA

    Pros

All the positives are externally focused - the good consultants and contractors we work with, the ability to truly "make a difference", the uplifting nature of what we do (who can argue with bringing positive reinforcement into the workplace?). The heavy travel comes with the territory

    Cons

All the negatives are internally focsed - on what was once a culture of integrity and transparancy that has become the opposite. Our senior leaders are greedy, they cannot make decisions, they don't tell us what is really going on and their walk is a lot different than the nice sounding talk they put out in gushy emails, meetings and townhall phone calls. Few of the rank and file trust any of the top leaders any more - and there are none that people respect (except the head of People). What a shame.

Former Employee, more than 3 years

    Pros

The core elements of what they teach/preach is great: positive reinforcement, candid feedback (bad and good), healthy work cultures, leaders who lead by example, strong values-basis. Going back the work CLG delivered in many clients can make a huge difference in performance AND creating great places in which to work. Unfortunately, less and less of this sort of quality and lasting work characterizes the past couple of years (see below).

    Cons

Terrible internal culture...the total opposite of what we preach. Trite, backbiting, posturing, unable to make quality decisions, self-serving, not focused on employees (consultants, contractors and staff) at all. The best people started leaving/were let go many years ago. Some hope for improvement started when founders left/were kicked out 3 years ago or so - but those hopes have died. The heavy reliance on contractors should be a red-flag to prospective clients as well: quality is slipping as is consistency. For prospective contractors - be very careful about what you'll actually get out of the relationship with CLG. For prospective new hires (I don't think they are hiring but if they do) - don't be hoodwinked by the great rhetoric: the internal culture is bad - very toxic.

Relatively small company with a big heart! Exciting to watch the company look toward its future!

    Apr. 28, 2020 - Consultant

    Pros

Internal "familial" feel. Lots of support and ability to learn from stellar talent with a variety of backgrounds and expertise. This is huge. Lots of autonomy and opportunity for growth in the work. This company has/is recently "re-discovering" itself and it's really exciting to watch the company grow in the right direction (strategically and internally culture-wise). The company recently re-vamped their compensation packages to be more competitive - this was fantastic! There's a more overt push for work/life balance which is also sorely appreciated.

    Cons

Although it's underway, the company really needs stronger internal systems of consultant development and delivering with integrity (i.e., ALULA's "special sauce" and ROI on every project!)

Caring, people-first organization with business discipline

    Pros

ALULA retained the good parts of CLG, but took it to the next level under the current leadership. People are first. The organization made significant changes and enhancements to recruiting new talent and growing and engaging current talent. They have spent the last few years making investments to the internal infrastructure of the company (offers, comp, rewards, business discipline) and know where they still need to improve as they grow and diversify. Recently developed perks programs that encourage volunteer work in the community and personal pursuit of work/life balance. Tremendous feedback from clients about the ALULA difference.

    Cons

Strong concentration in oil and gas industry.

    Hypocritical company

    Pros

Steve Jacobs is an excellent Chairman and person to work with. Quiet working environment.

    Cons

There is no trust amongst the senior employees due to gossiping, sniggering, and an attitude of “some employees are stupid”. The Consultants look down their noses at those who are not like them. No ability to be part of the “team” if you can’t freely share ideas without being backstabbed, and laughed at. Too many projects pop up without knowing who is supposed to do what. Somewhere this train went off the track.

    Pros

The flexibility to live anywhere and work from home are great advantages, as well as the robust benefits packages. Lots of opportunities to make contacts.

    Cons

It is a small company so it is difficult for them to have the capacity to develop individuals. also because of the industries they are concentrated in that greatly impacts the availability of work opportunities.
