At what level is it worth making the switch into management? I often see my manager working long hours and tasked with very difficult projects while my director has a more laid back vibe going. I assume this is because managers focus on the nuances of a project while directors focus on the big picture. Should I wait until I'm a principal engineer before switching to a director level role or should I go the path of Manager to Sr. Manager to Director?

management isn’t for everyone and most companies have different carrier ladders for ICs and People Mgrs. Most principle level roles are = to director, just IC
