Wave – Why Work With Us?

In 2010, as a scrappy bootstrapped startup, we made our entrance with an industry-changing application: free, easy online accounting software made for small businesses. From that foundation, we’ve grown to a full suite of award-winning software and services, for small businesses owners and freelancers: invoicing, accounting, payment processing, payroll and more.

Simply put, we are making a difference in the way small business owners manage their finances, which in turn helps their business grow and thrive.

At Wave, we take pride not only in our own accomplishments, but also in the accomplishments of our brave entrepreneurs and watch in excitement as we see our small business owners succeed with help from our service.

Located in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood (just a 10 minute ride from the downtown core), Wave’s offices are based in the historical Wrigley Gum factory. However, contrary to the vintage feel of our building, our office space is anything but old-fashioned. Our beautiful, dog-friendly space has everything you need and more, from an all-inclusive games room to an onsite yoga studio.

Hungry during the day? Head to our fully stocked kitchen to feast on a wide variety of healthy (and some not so healthy) snacks.

Focus on your personal growth and career development, all at once! We offer world class training and development courses to set you on the path you want to be on. Read more about them here.

Take part in our incredible off-site events! Whether it's our Holiday party or unique summer events run by our executive team, there is tons of fun to be had outside of the office with your coworkers.

While these extra-curriculars may seem like a distraction on the surface, fear not, as these perks translate seamlessly into your daily work routine, allowing autonomous reign over your day-to-day tasks. If you are someone who likes to take the bull by the horns and get the job done in a fast-paced environment surrounded by talented, helpful individuals, then Wave may just be the place for you!

We truly want every Waver to think of Wave as more than just a job, but also an experience. Don’t just take our word for it, check out our photo gallery to see what our culture is all about.

One of the core values here at Wave is the idea of acting with “Uncompromising Integrity.” We extend this value as a basis for our diversification and inclusion policy in not only the look of our office, but also in the diversification of thought which can be accomplished by bringing people together of all different backgrounds and upbringings.

We are proud to have been named to the 2018 list of Best Workplaces for Inclusion in an analysis conducted by Great Place to Work. This analysis is based on employee agreeance that they are treated fairly regardless of personal characteristics (such as gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.)

I have been working at Wave full-time (More than 3 years)

Wave is a great company to work for a number of reasons:

It's leadership is driven in providing value for their customers first, rather than their own bottom-line; with the belief being that customer-driven decisions will lead to greater returns in the future–and it works. The leadership team is very open about the company's trajectory, its metrics, and the difficult decisions it needs to make.

    - There's plenty of challenging work to be had. What's more is that they trust you and your expertise to take an idea and run with it, and support you when you when, and if, you need it.

    - Collaboration and teamwork are paramount to the company's success. Every effort is made to work "across the table" and collaborate throughout the company. There might not be enough resourcing for every initiative; but if you make your case well, you will be supported.

    - There are plenty of opportunities to learn. Wave is always encouraging its employees to up-skill in both "soft" skills like leadership and team management, and in hard skills, including the latest technologies. Management is open to discussing their employees' career plans and provides resources to help you achieve those goals. It does require self-discipline, but the support is definitely there.

    - The company really cares for its employees' well-being. This has come to light most these past few months with the outbreak of COVID-19. Daily mental, physical and professional programming has been put in place, should you choose to use it or not. Every effort has been made to make employees feel at ease, and leadership has been candid about what it's planning on doing. They are open to suggestions for better improving company morale.

Wave isn't for everyone. You need to be self-motivated to thrive here, and be willing to accept ambiguity in your tasks; it's up to you to work your way through it and come up with a solution.

As long as you have the patience needed, and the willingness to understand and learn from your colleagues, it will be a rewarding experience.

    Advice to Management

You're definitely on the right track on so many counts these days, especially with your support of your employees during the pandemic.

Continue to ask your employees about their career trajectories and goals, and make sure managers are comfortable and well-resourced to have those conversations with their teams and produce tangible results. Employees need to be self-starters in their own careers paths, but it is always good to remind them that they have the options available to further their professional goals at Wave.

RSP matching would be a great benefit to have, as well!

    Difficult Interview

I applied online. I interviewed at Wave.

    1. Phone call with HR to get to know each other
    2. home assignment
3, 2.5 hours with 3 teams, 2 are of technical interviews and 1 is general.
My overall experience was very good, even though I didn't get the job but I can feel that they were doing the best to assess me if I am a good fit for the company. All of them are very nice and try to help me through this process.
The most important thing is that I can feel that people working there actually love the job and the company.
