Wave's office:

Located in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood (just a 10 minute ride from the downtown core), Wave’s offices are based in the historical Wrigley Gum factory. However, contrary to the vintage feel of our building, our office space is anything but old-fashioned. Our beautiful, dog-friendly space has everything you need and more, from an all-inclusive games room to a gorgeous patio overlooking the city, an onsite yoga studio and a fully stocked kitchen. So what's happening now?

While we take huge pride in our office space and are consistently doing our best to make sure every Waver feels right at home there, we also understand that, with the current situation, each individual has different preferences and needs to stay as healthy and productive as possible. Therefore, our people have had complete freedom to choose whether they prefer to work fully remotely or partially from the office (following comprehensive health and safety guidelines) for the foreseeable future. 

Working from home has been a big change for many, but we made sure that the transition was a smooth as possible, and that our team still feels connected, productive, healthy, and empowered to do their best work. That included changing our benefits to provide higher flexibility, adding a whole suite of online clases for our employees and their families (from exercise classes to music, cooking, and physical + emotional wellness), switching the format our our monthly townhalls, sharing videos and fun content from Wavers at home, providing delicious meals delivered by our small business customers, and adding extra vacation time for everyone during long weekends so that our people can relax and recharge.

We understand these are trying times, but regardless of location or situation, we are unwavering in our commitment to take amazing care of our people, and we will continue to adapt as needed to ensure our people are happy and healthy, no matter where they work from.

Like most entrepreneurs, Kirk Simpson (co-founder and CEO of Wave) hated everything to do with accounting, invoicing and payroll. Before launching Wave he owned two successful tech companies, in a time when there wasn’t a simple and free financial software in the market for small businesses. Understanding first-hand the pain of managing finances, he knew there had to be a better way to support small business owners.

So in 2010 Kirk, along with James Lochrie, officially launched Wave. At the time, only eight employees working out of a small shared workspace in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood. As a scrappy bootstrapped startup, we made our entrance with an industry-changing application: free, easy online accounting software made for small businesses. 

From that foundation, we’ve grown to a full suite of award-winning software and services for small businesses owners and freelancers: invoicing, accounting, payment processing, payroll, and now online banking - bringing all financial aspects of a small business together to make life a lot easier. With over 250 employees serving small business owners around the world, and backed by one of the largest tax preparation companies in the world, H&B Block - who acquired Wave in 2019 - we are unwavering in our mission to empower entrepreneurs while also empowering and growing our people.

    I have been working at Wave full-time (Less than a year)


    I’ve worked at Wave for about half a year and I can say without a doubt, this is the best place I have ever worked. Everything has been flawless from the recruitment process/onboarding experience to the company’s response to Covid-19. I specifically want to talk about Wave’s response to Covid-19. It feels like the company did everything they could to avoid terminating employees. This was probably the most meaningful thing the company has done – I’ve seen so many people losing their jobs and I’m very grateful that Wave didn’t have to resort to that. Besides this, they’ve introduced so many programs to help us get through this. We have access to virtual yoga, bootcamp, and various seminars on mental health, productivity etc. just to name a few! Our Wave traditions are also continuing like lunch being provided to us on townhall days. I know these things are not easy to organize but the P&C team has been amazing in supporting everyone! They’ve also introduced a new return to work handbook and you can see they have done a lot to ensure that the return to the office is safe. All I can say is this company really cares about their people – it shows through the actions taken especially during Covid. Amazing culture, amazing leadership, amazing employees!

    I applied online. I interviewed at Wave.


    1. Phone call with HR to get to know each other
    2. home assignment
    3, 2.5 hours with 3 teams, 2 are of technical interviews and 1 is general.
    My overall experience was very good, even though I didn't get the job but I can feel that they were doing the best to assess me if I am a good fit for the company. All of them are very nice and try to help me through this process.
    The most important thing is that I can feel that people working there actually love the job and the company.
