    Senior Software Engineer Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Toronto, ON
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Uberflip (Toronto, ON) in January 2020.

    Interview

I generally do not review interviews on Glassdoor, however, I had a bad experience here - so posting it

I have given more than 15 interviews in the last 1 month and the experience here was the weirdest and the only one for which is worthy of a negative review.

Applied online: I had a good chat with the hiring manager wherein the person went in-depth with what i had worked on
I had clarified upfront I am primarily a backend developer and I just know the basics about web dev.

The next day I reach the office. Which is pretty good but not so well connected to the subway.
My interviewing panel consisted of a product person who has no tech experience for years and a front end developer who has absolutely no idea about backend technologies.

Both the assigned interviewers were off to what I did and what I was interviewing for.
The frontend developer seemed to want to ask me a few frontend-only tech questions which I couldn't

And the product person was asking me business-related questions from my company which were way off my domain of knowledge.
Within 20 minutes of the interview, they asked the customary question of whether I had any further questions - which shook me off. They hardly went in-depth with regards to what work I had done, nor into DS/algo or system designs. In fact, when I tried to go in-depth with my experience they snapped at me asking to answer in a boolean way

It seemed the company is quite employee-focused but personally I had a very bad experience. I don't know who is at fault here; whether there was lot of mismanagement internally, or if I did something wrong or if it just wasn't my day - I personally believe there was a lot of mismanagement involved

One should try and understand that a candidate probably spends more than 2 hours to come/leave to the office and you just give 20 mins of half hearted time for the interview. At least give a chance what a person has to express for the allocated time. If not that then do what most companies do: have a screening online round in advance so that you don't waste the candidates time and see if there is any match with the candidate

    Interview Questions

    • About my last project - quite superficially, they were not interested in going in-depth. And after one point the questions were too be answered in binary - Yes or No.   Answer Question
    • How do you think your previous company (which was a sports media company) - will complete against its rival company (who's name I had never heard of - which is not even remotely related to Software)   Answer Question
