  1. Project Manager Interview

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Pacific Blue Cross (Surrey, BC) in May 2021

Applied online. HR screening interview. Then interview with managers. Then panel interview.
Was an engaged process throughout. Polite. Bias from previous meetings may have been introduced, altho not explicitly. Many of the questions leaned towards a line staff perspective, vs. an integrated top-down and bottom-up approach.

I'm mindful interviews emphasize fit based on gaps, strengths, and weaknesses within the company as well as the value brought by the candidate. The company has been working on introducing Scaled Agile for three years. Does not have full buy-in from the teams. May be still looking for that expert to deliver across the enterprise. I'm also mindful these roles often recruit past deadlines, looking for that expert.

For each role hired the committee asks if the candidate has experience with coaching Scaled Agile. The team did not explain what SA is during any of the interviews, but this is fine because I already have some familiarity. Cultural workflow roadblocks were identified. But strategies for change management and tiered integration were not approached in the discussion.

Scaled Agile often benefits from a robust portfolio, and bottom-up, approach. Application within siloes may be working better than cross-system integration at this time. A need to strengthen data-driven decision-making was also indicated. SAFe is often indicated as a poor cultural fit if there is not adequate executive buy-in.

Very exciting projects, and SAFe initiative. I would recommend managing as a transformation project. Unclear the process or approach towards integrating, but Scaled Agile Inc. does have a roadmap that can be referenced, with competency assessments to help evaluate engagement, quality, and manage constraints.

BC employers are leaning more and more on general/ generic questions during interviews, putting pressure on the candidate to provide technical and focus answers that are relevant to the key priorities and challenges faced by the role. Technical questions are often not provided as a follow-up, to clarify. The push is also towards discussing perfect execution, stakeholder management, and relationships while implicitly, definitely not explicitly, acknowledging that moving too fast for BC businesses can create a lot of resistance that needs to be managed thoughtfully. The complete interview process was not articulated, possibly pivoting based at the discretion of the hiring committee.

    Overall, a decent experience.

What is your experience working with the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) model? How did you support its integration and use across the enterprise?
