I worked at NerdWallet full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits (competitive pay, 410k match, generous PTO, all the food, drinks, and snacks you can enjoy), some really smart and nice people, interesting industry to be solving problems in.

    Cons

The quality of your experience depends primarily on which team you end up on, as there is no consistency when it comes to process, output, vision, talent, and most importantly - professionalism and communication. Some teams are great, and some will have you frantically trying to get out of an unhealthy work environment.

The company's vision is so incredibly vague, and constantly changing. Despite this being a concern brought up repeatedly by employees, no progress has been made on defining company goals or roadmaps.

Leadership is consistently battling in a turf war, and the rest of the company bear the brunt of this constant conflict. High performing employees get pushed out for questionable reasons - too many for it to just be an anomaly. It reflects a pattern for how leadership deals with their own shortcomings. There is a crazy amount of turnover because of this, which means making progress on project work or career growth can be close to impossible, as teammates and managers are constantly leaving.

Harassment is rampant (both verbal and physical) and HR doesn't take any action to address it other than silencing people. It's a good reminder that the department is there to protect the company, and not individual employees. While the company does indeed provide many avenues to voice concerns, you often get reprimanded for speaking up.

Overall, NerdWallet treats their employees like they are completely disposable, and many people live in constant fear of being fired or pushed out.

    Writer (Personal Finance) Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in New York, NY (US)
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at NerdWallet (New York, NY (US)) in June 2020.

    Interview

This company strung me along for nearly two months. Initially, I took an extensive writing test for a Data Writer (Insurance) job and interviewed with via Zoom. Then after that the recruiter sent me a note saying that someone else was chosen for the job, and they'd like to consider me for the Writer (Personal Finance) job. But here's the catch: They asked me to take a second extensive test. I refused to take it. They agreed to take my extensive writing samples since I am a careered journalist. They accepted them, but it was apparent in the interview that the hiring managers didn't read them. I had to interview via Zoom for a second time with about an hour's worth of grilling from two men. Questions were less about my skills and more about why I wanted to leave my current company, mistakes in the past, negative feedback I'd been given, etc. Then after that I got a note saying: We wanted to let you know that we have chosen to move forward with a different candidate for the Writer (Personal Finance) position.

I have a master's degree and have worked at CNN and NBC. They treat everyone like an entry-level writer. When I asked questions about the writer job, I realized quickly that it's more about taking old articles, optimizing them, ranking on Google, and getting people to click so that they get paid. More or less, it's pretty much a glorified content farm. I wouldn't take this as a career role. I was just interviewing to get extra money for my savings goals. Of course, they didn't know that.
