McMillan – Why Work For Us?

Most creative agencies dabble in B2B. We don’t dabble. We’re all in.

The way we see it, selling cloud services just isn’t the same as selling cologne. It demands a certain skill set. A certain depth. A certain—some would say obsessive—curiosity.

That’s why ambitious global B2B brands seek us out to help them articulate their unique and authentic voice, tell their most compelling stories, and engage their customers and influencers at every touchpoint in the customer journey.

In the world of business-to-business selling, there will always be those who strive to rise above the rest. At McMillan, we call them our clients.

Our aspriration is to be the most sought-after B2B creative agency in the world.

We know that it’s a lofty premise, but there is no way to become great unless we intend to be great. Our aspiration is to create work that rises above the work of other agencies, and gains the attention of the C-suite of the world’s most ambitious B2B brands.

Check out our reel to see what we’re talking about and if you want to see even more of what we do then check out our website.

At McMillan “B2B creative” is not an oxymoron. We’re here to do honest, imaginative, engaging work.

 You could be here, too.

We attract curious, ambitious people who know what they’re doing. And want to do it in a cool office. With dogs.

Here’s just a few of the benefits to working at McMillan:

  • 1 collaborative creative review every day. (Rework your work with your coworkers.)
  • 3.2 office dogs present per day. (We hit “peak dog” status on June 13, 2015, with 6 pooches reporting to work.)
  • 150+ year-old heritage office building. (Yes, Oscar Wilde actually spoke here.)
  • 500+ places to eat, drink, and shop on our doorstep. (Our Wi-Fi extends to the bar downstairs.)
  • 1 major pro bono account each year, plus other creative outlets. (We lied—we don’t only do B2B.)
  • 1 paid volunteer day a year at the charity of your choice. (Is it still volunteering if you get paid?)

If that wasn’t enough, here’s a few more:

Professional development

In addition to company-wide development days and retreats, we’ve sent people to SXSW, DesignThinkers, OFFF Barcelona, the Cannes Lions, Hyper Island Stockholm, Adobe MAX, Blend Fest, the One Show Creative Leaders Retreat, Fast Company Innovation Uncensored, and more.

Your time vs. our time

In addition to vacations and time-for-time, our employees get their birthdays off, plus extra holidays—including when we close the office between Christmas and New Year’s.

We also give employees the flexibility to work from home when it makes sense, and offer flex time for appointments and obligations such as daycare pickups and caring for family members.

Health benefits

Our benefits plan covers employees and their families for medical, dental, and vision expenses—and pays 100% of extended health benefits, which include a wide range of physical, psychological, and developmental therapies, plus alternative medicines and treatments.

We can also connect you with financial planning and other assistance programs.

Stuff to fill our social media feeds

The employee-led Committee to be Committed plans social events throughout the year that keep our teams cohesive, our minds limber, and our bellies full.

And even when there's nothing going on, there's still always something going on.

An open letter to candidates, former employees, and current employees

Dear colleagues,

McMillan is new to Glassdoor and we are looking forward to hearing your insights, comments, and suggestions. The way we see it, if you have taken time out of your busy day to visit this page, we would like you to know that we are listening to what you have to say.

Our culture is fueled on feedback, we eat it for breakfast.

Our leadership team fosters an open and transparent culture where everyone is treated fairly and with the utmost respect. It’s how we roll.

As evidence of this commitment, I am happy to share that we are in the midst of a year-long leadership training program for the seventeen individuals that make up our executive and management teams. Our training is designed to challenge expectations, build skills, and broaden perspective. We are exploring all areas of leadership including but not limited to; leadership style, emotional intelligence, difficult conversations, career development, talent management, relationship intelligence, change management, employee performance reviews, coaching and mentoring, giving and receiving feedback, empowering teams, interviewing and hiring, listening effectively.

Our aspiration is to be the most sought-after B2B creative agency in the world and an employer of choice. It is what fuels our fire. We’ve built an all-star team and are looking forward to growing it.

Every piece of feedback we receive is humbling, and we thank you for your candor.

Sincerely,

Dawn Kadlec

Vice President, Operations

We’re creative folks. Sometimes we get up to mischief, and we often do things differently. But we always get the job done. That’s because doing great work, in a great environment, is important to us. Also, we like dogs.

I have been working at McMillan full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There is no gossiping - the culture is very positive. Work culture is non-toxic - it's refreshing!

Executives are approachable, friendly, real people. They have earned people's respect.

All the employees are talented, inquisitive, and hard-working - we frequently share inspiration with each other.

Projects have well put-together teams - there is a sense of collaboration, and feedback is encouraged which makes working with people really easy.

There is a lot of participation in terms of social activities (of which there are a lot!) and the social committee works hard to make sure the events are unique and exciting.

There is free fruit in the kitchens daily and candy in all the meeting rooms - and people bring in their dogs frequently!

    Cons

Non-competitive salaries, and benefits package could be greatly improved: there are only 2 weeks of vacation to start and no group RRSP matching plan that is common in other workplaces.

There is a lack of an established process for some things which can be hectic at times. They are aware and this is being worked on.

Employee reviews are frequently held late.

HR has set up the software to require an explanation for any time off booked (including personal appointments and vacations), which can be sensitive in terms of privacy.

The company can do more in terms of establishing itself as a thought leader and involving itself in the community. Use social media more frequently!

    Advice to Management

HR policies should be reviewed to ensure that they make sense and are competitive. Other than that - keep it up!

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at McMillan (Toronto, ON) in March-2016.

    Interview

The interview was done through Skype and was very straightforward with no BS. The questions were mostly about why I am comfortable working with B2B clients and why I'm interested in moving to Ottawa. The interviewers were kind and warm, not intimidating at all.
