I worked at Maryland Office of the Public Defender full-time (More than 3 years)

Great support is given from the top of the organization all the way down. People are there to help and give back to the less fortunate. GREAT benefits at a great cost. Most of your coworkers turn into life long family. Always a great resource and helping hand even outside of the office.

Pay more! The employees deserve a better starting salary (especially living in Maryland). Hire more attorneys to help the overwhelming case load. Hire paralegals for every single office. The attorneys need the help. Pay your entire staff a better salary - they deserve it!!!

    Advice to Management

Do NOT place an attorney in a managing attorney position just because they have been in the agency for many years. Everyone is not manager material, it causes the rest of the staff to suffer.

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Maryland Office of the Public Defender in April 2020.

I applied online and was contacted about 1 month later for a screening interview. The interview was with the Recruitment Director, the statewide director of the division I was applying for, and the head of that division from the specific office I had applied to. Overall, I was asked about 8-10 main questions with a couple of smaller follow-up questions, and the interview lasted about 30 minutes. Be prepared for hypotheticals about how you would deal with particular types of clients, as well as detailed questions about what kinds of legal documents you've written in your past jobs or internships -- even if the job was over a decade ago. I didn't make it to the second round of interviews (they were looking for someone with more trial litigation experience), but it was an overall positive experience and all of the interviewers were very friendly and respectful.
