Cenovus – Why Work For Us?

Cenovus is a Canadian oil and natural gas company

Since our launch as a company in 2009 we’ve established a track record of being a responsible developer of Canada’s energy resources. In the past year, we increased our oil sands holdings and added natural gas and liquids assets following a significant acquisition.

Our business strategy is now focused on the responsible development of these two energy growth platforms to create long-term value for our shareholders. We plan to do this by increasing cash flows through disciplined investment in our vast portfolio of oil sands and Deep Basin natural gas and liquids assets in Western Canada. We’re focused on maximizing shareholder value through cost leadership and realizing the best margins for our products to help us maintain financial resilience and deliver sustainable dividend growth.

We plan to achieve our strategy by drawing on the expertise of our people and leveraging our strategic differentiators: premium asset quality, executional excellence, value-added integration, focused innovation and trusted reputation.

Our Vision
To be the energy company of choice for investors, staff and stakeholders.

Our Mission
To maximize the value of the company by responsibly developing oil and natural gas assets in a safe, innovative and efficient way.

Our Values

Safety
Safety before all else.

Integrity
We are transparent, honest and treat everyone with respect.

Performance
We work as one team to make smart decisions that deliver results.

Accountability
We do what we say we will do.

Giving back

At Cenovus we realize that we have a responsibility to manage our activities in the areas where we operate to create a positive impact for both the community and the business. We're striving to ensure the communities where we live and work are stronger and better off as a result of us being there. In the accompanying photo, our President & Chief Executive Officer Alex Pourbaix participated in a recent Community Investment event in support of I Can For Kids.

So as you can see, we’re about giving more than just a cheque. We tailor our investment decisions to the needs of each community we are working with based on our guidelines and focus areas. It’s not just about financial donations. Some of the ways we invest are through creating programs, giving in-kind support, sharing ideas, or hosting and supporting events. We also look for ways for our employees and their families to get involved through our giving and volunteering programs.

Responsible

We’re committed to responsible development of the oil sands in northern Alberta and that means understanding our impact on the environment. That’s why we’re using 135 remote cameras and 75 sound recording units to improve our knowledge around which animals are near our operations and how they interact with our facilities.

These cameras and audio recording units give us a large data set from which to draw information and contribute to better-informed development decisions. These new monitoring techniques also reduce the amount of field-based human monitoring required, which reduces safety risks and disturbance to animals within our project areas.

You can get more details on this from our story and video at: https://www.cenovus.com/news/our-stories/all-eyes-and-ears-on-wildlife.html

I have been working at Cenovus full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Cenovus has a very comprehensive benefits program. A newly announced family leave program (11 weeks for birth mothers, 5 weeks for anyone else - including adoptive parents), excellent vacation (4 weeks at age 30, and grows to 6 weeks at age 60ish), Christmas is off, and then 13 flex days a year. It has a good bonus and LTI program, and offers opportunities to grow/learn.

The company has weathered the finanacial/low oil crisis and after paying down its debt is now getting back to a position where we can grow.

New leadership team is a lot better, and making a lot of positive change. Management has been consistently executing what they preach over the past 4 quarters, and the balance sheet has improved dramatically.

Cenovus has some of the best assets in the oil and gas industry. Much lower operating and capital costs, and lower GHG emissions than its peers.

    Cons

There’s been a lot of change. Management’s decision to acquire the FCCL assets (actually it was a belief we overpaid - most staff agreed with buying FCCL).

    Advice to Management

Continue paying down debt, and improve the balance sheet. Then we can begin to invest again.

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Cenovus (Calgary, AB) in June-2017.

    Interview

Very casual and comfortable experience. Interview was focused on the relationships between groups within the company. Hiring to improve those relationships benefits everyone. The direction is changing from the past where there was only one focus and that was to get it built fast, and now there is more time and the opportunity make improvements without sacrificing project timelines.
