I have been working at Aha! full-time

    Pros

Aha! is a great work environment with a phenomenal culture of kindness, responsiveness and hard work. It is as good as it sounds. I personally love that we are completely goal-driven and intentional in what we do, which means that the entire company is completely aligned on initiatives. The communication is far superior within our remote team then it is within co-located teams in my prior companies. If you need help with something, the team will quickly support you.
Lastly, the work I do is incredibly meaningful. I end my day feeling accomplished and knowing the impact I’ve made on the company. It's hard to get that for a sustained period of time at other companies.

    Cons

It’s hard to think of any cons. This is the busiest I’ve ever been at work (I wouldn’t have it any other way), which means that Aha! may not be for you if you are looking for a very laid-back remote role with lots of spare time during the day.

    Advice to Management

Keep maintaining this amazing culture and work environment as the company continues to grow quickly

    Senior Software Engineer Interview

    Average Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Aha! (Squamish, BC) in April 2018.

    Interview

I interviewed for a software engineering position. The process was well organized and moved swiftly without making me feel like anyone's time was being wasted — I appreciated knowing quickly whether we would move on to the next step without being left hanging. All said, I did 5 interview calls with 4 different people.

The interviews were all done over video calls with the team leads that I would be working with, as well as the cofounders (Chris & Brian, CTO and CEO). Putting a face to a name on these calls helped make the process feel more natural & conversational. This was one of my concerns about working with a fully-remote company, but it was reassuring to see that face-to-face conversations are valued right from the start.

The interviews covered some technical questions but were mainly focused on talking through the problems, and not just asking for knowledge of code trivia. If perhaps some of the examples weren't clearly defined & framed for an obvious answer, like on a test, I found that this actually prompted more discussion and reflected how we actually work in the real world—this made the conversations more interesting & relevant. (A good engineer asks lots of clarifying questions!)
