I have worked with agencies in the past and I had hoped this agency, which seemed to have 'higher standards' of placement opportunities, would be the next step in my career; however, I was greatly disappointed, for a few, but critical reasons.
Unknowingly, I was placed into an extremely toxic work environment, so toxic in fact, that I was the third person that week to be placed in the position. When I needed to talk to my recruiter about some very serious issues (ex, illegal HR policies) with my placement (3 emails, 3 voicemails) I had absolutely no communication back or follow up (it was becoming obvious the recruiter knew the problems I would have but didn't want to hear it). It wasn't until I left that I got a call back expressing concern, and my recruiter then had told me that David Aplin would no longer serve this company because they care about the welfare of their temping staff. Then, when I got a placement in the internal office I learned from all other recruiters, including my own, that every one of them knew and made comments about how toxic my previous placement was, however, they mentioned that "it is too bad we still have work with them". So obviously, unknowing staff are still being placed in knowingly toxic placements, so long as David Aplin receives their placement fee.
Although the starting wage is ok; however, they do not pay according to education and experience. I was receiving the same pay as someone with absolutely no office experience, and I have 5+ years with post secondary. They get their placement fee, which is how the recruiters make their income, so the cheaper they bill you out for, the more clients companies they get in the pool.
I also had asked for the job placement details and requirements prior to starting the position so I knew what was to be expected of me; however, I never did receive any information, again, after several calls/emails.
Advice to Management
Placing temp staff in a knowingly toxic work environment looks incredibly bad on your agency. It is not worth the negative feedback and negative staff experience to hold onto one company for a placement fee when you have such a good quality and large pool of client companies. Proactive follow-up may have resolved this negative review and I may wanted to have continue to work with the agency.
Providing a detailed work order for contract staff, which would include request information, position information, duties, etc.. would benefit staff welfare because then staff would know exactly what is expected, and have a better idea of when HR would be needed.
