Description

We are currently looking for a Junior Software Engineer (JSE) to join our team at our Markham, Ontario, CANADA location. The Junior Software Engineer’s role is to develop software solutions to meet Optima’s specifications. Engineering focus areas for this position include wireless gateways, LAN/WAN switches, IoT nodes, interface units and sensors. The candidate may also be tasked with test fixture development, production line software development and data collection validation. Together with the assistance of other Optima personnel, the JSE will also be asked to perform extensive hands-on verification, in-depth evaluation and stress-testing of new features and in all Optima developed software products.

Responsibilities

• Working with a team to develop, test, and maintain web and desktop-based business applications built on the latest web/IoT technologies.
• Assisting in the collection and documentation of user’s requirements, development of use cases, and estimates.
• Preparing reports, manuals and other documentation on the proper use, operation and maintenance of Optima’s software products.
• Design, develop, and unit test applications in accordance with established standards.
• Participating in peer-reviews of solution designs and related code.
• Package and support deployment of releases.
• Working with teammates on the migration of older applications to current technologies.
• Developing, refining, and tuning integration between applications.
• Analyzing and resolving technical and application problems.
• Adhering to high-quality development principles while delivering solutions on-time and on-budget.
• Providing support to Optima customers by closely working with the Optima support team.
• Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

Position Requirements

Formal Education & Certification

• Undergraduate’s or Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience (1 or more years of experience as a Junior Software Engineer).

Knowledge & Experience

• Studied or completed Information Technology or related courses in post-secondary education.
• Exposure to one or more of the following programming languages: Java, Javascript, SQL, C, C++, PHP, Python.
• Proven ability to write design, build, test and debug software.
• Knowledge of operating systems (Microsoft, Unix, Linux).
• Demonstrated proficiency in the following technologies: JavaScript, HTML, XML, SQL, JSON.
• Knowledge of relational database management systems such as MySQL.
• Knowledge of software life-cycle and agile methodologies.
• Knowledge of web services and service-oriented architectures.
• Experience in data processing, data visualization, statistics, time series analysis, and analytical processes in general.
• Familiarity with test automation tools.
• Familiarity with the Eclipse development environment.
• Knowledge of troubleshooting local area networks, wide area networks and data communications equipment.
• Working knowledge of a range of diagnostic utilities.
• Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a focus on rapport-building, listening, and questioning skills.
• Strong documentation skills.

Work Conditions

• Sitting for extended periods of time.
• Manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, power tools, and to handle other computer components.
• Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals.
• Candidate must have legal working status, be a permanent resident or Canadian citizen, and be fluent in English.

Work Environment

• This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.
• This job will occasionally require travel to facilities and locations operated by Optima’s customers.
