    The Sterling Hall School (SHS), founded in 1987, is a leading independent school that specializes in educating boys during their formative years of Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. We are known for delivering innovative, proven and boy-focused programming that includes an exceptional academic curriculum and outstanding character education. SHS is a small, supportive environment with an actively engaged community of boys, faculty, staff, parents and alumni.

    Summary of Position

    The Director of Finance (DF) is an approachable leader, who provides strategic and operational direction for many key school functions and initiatives, including the effective management of finance, human resources, property and facilities, and ancillary services.

    The DF reports directly to the Principal and is a key member of the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT), providing proactive advice and support to the Board, the SLT and all employees, in alignment with the school’s strategic and financial priorities.

    SHS is in an exciting stage of campus expansion, with a substantial new building project currently in the planning stages. The DF will work closely with the Principal and various vendors to support the realization of this transformational development and to ensure SHS’s ongoing financial stability.

    Specific responsibilities

    Finance

    • Develops and implements long-term financial plans in alignment with the strategic objectives of SHS, as well as the objectives of Sterling Hall School Foundation (SHSF).
    • Prepares and manages annual operating and capital expenditure budgets, ensuring prudent allocation of resources to support SHS goals.
    • Manages financial operations and monitors and analyzes financial performance for reporting to the SHS and SHSF Boards of Governors, and to other stakeholders, as required.
    • Oversees financial aspects of major construction projects, including collaboration with vendors, financial providers, and the Advancement team to support capital campaigns.

    Human Resources

    • Manages recruitment and onboarding; retention and performance management; employee relations; development of policies and procedures; compensation and benefits; health and safety; training and development.
    • Ensures SHS’s policies and practices attract and retain talented and diverse employees while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
    • Leads a team working in finance, facilities, healthcare, administration, and ancillary services, fostering a culture of collaboration, professionalism, and trust.

    Property and Facilities

    • Liaises with our facilities and food services management service providers regarding staffing, operations, and contracts.
    • Collaborates with the facilities team in planning and executing work to ensure the effective maintenance and renewal of building systems and infrastructure.

    Skills, Experience, and Attributes

    • A Bachelor’s degree and a CPA designation are required; HR accreditation is an asset.
    • A minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in finance and human resources, ideally in an educational environment, with a background in the not-for-profit sector.
    • Strategic thinker with the ability to align financial and human resource practices with the school’s mission and goals, and with an appreciation of an independent school environment.
    • Strong financial acumen, including expertise in financial planning, analysis, and reporting, with proficiency in finance and HR software, as well as Google Suite.
    • High level of emotional intelligence and excellent communication skills.
    • Supportive and empathetic, with sound judgment, integrity, tact, and discretion to deal effectively with sensitive and confidential matters.
    • Strong work ethic, recognizing the need for a full-time presence on site, and willing to work extended hours as required, including some evenings and weekends.
