The Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism (ASAU) at Carleton University invites applications from qualified candidates for a full-time (tenure-track) appointment in climate adaptation and building rehabilitation at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning 01 July 2024. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching, design, research, or professional practice appropriate for the level of appointment and demonstrate potential for high caliber research in the areas of climate adaptation and building rehabilitation. The candidate will be required to teach design studios and lecture courses or workshops in both the undergraduate and graduate programs.

We are seeking candidates with strong design skills, a demonstrated awareness that design and building adaptations are enmeshed in sociocultural inequities and the climate crisis, and in-depth knowledge of existing buildings, materials, and assemblies (cold climate preferred). Candidates should demonstrate how their work critically engages with existing architectural practices of adaptation and rehabilitation. Expertise might include environmental stewardship and climate justice, application of building retrofit and adaptive reuse practices in cold climates, climate impact and heritage vulnerability, climate mitigation and adaptation, heritage and urban conservation, social resilience, embodied carbon assessment of buildings and materials, cultural landscapes and land remediation, digital documentation, land-based teaching grounded in local knowledge systems, among other areas of architecture.

Required Qualifications

• A terminal professional degree in Architecture (i.e. M.Arch).
• Candidates must demonstrate creative or professional experience and/or ability to translate expertise to teach core architecture design studio and lecture-based courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Excellent track record of scholarly and/or creative research output that demonstrates potential for independent research and the ability to develop an externally-funded, high quality research program.
• Excellent ability to contribute to the academic life of the Unit.

Desired Qualifications

• A Ph.D. and/or Professional Registration.
• High potential for collaborative research with existing members of the Unit is an asset.
