I was interviewed by two of the lead game artists assigned to a project on which I would have been assigned a contract. After completing a skill test, which they demonstrated excitement, and confidence in, I was asked to show more (past) examples of the type of work that was performed in the test. I can not, to this day, figure out why anyone would care about an artists past skill-set as opposed to their most recent, and most relevant work. I was denied this position because I did not have a backlog of relevant work, however, had a current, on-demand example of the skills required for, and expected by this company and position.

Reality check! As an artist trying to make it in today's economy I was working multiple part-time jobs trying to support myself for years, and while I kept my skills on point, had not had any opportunity to update my portfolio with finished pieces. The skill test was all that should have mattered because I had demonstrated that I was capable of performing the required task(s) on time. Less

Here's a little insight into hiring artists, and this pertains to any creative department in any company: If you, as a candidate, cannot multitask well enough to prioritize updating your portfolio - one of the most important tools you have to market yourself as an artist or designer - it is assumed by the hiring Art Director or Manager that you lack the drive or passion or skills to cut it as a commercial artist. In my department, I won't even look at a candidate that doesn't have an updated online portfolio. If they can't make the time to showcase their work (something that they should be very passionate about), why should I assume they can handle or care about the work being assigned to them? BOTTOM LINE: There are plenty of artists out there clamoring to get a job in the game industry (or any industry for that matter) and it's a very competitive market. Don't make a half-hearted attempt at marketing yourself and expect to get hired, especially when other candidates go above and beyond to represent themselves. Less

Why do you think you would be a fit here at Three Rings Design; Sega of America?

I am a gamer who plays for enjoyment. I create art that is player focused and that I like. I can adapt to many styles both traditionally and digitally. I have no problem learning new software and teaching others that new software quickly. I grew up with Sega and can create the company's style art in modal. Less
