I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Tripadvisor (Boston, MA) in Oct 2019

Interview

The interviewer is unprofessional, rude and pompous. To give a brief background, I'm an engineer from a big tech company and I have done my fair share of interviewing people + interviewing for jobs. I scheduled an interview with them two weeks ago. When the time came, it was a no show. I waited for around 15 minutes until I had to contact the recruiter and they said there was a failure in their system. Today I had the followup interview with them again. The person was late two minutes, but this is normally within the limits and I will again give them another pass. The interviewer cut straight to the point about asking questions, (which I like because it gives me more time to do the test and more time for questions later). However, the tone of the voice was just rude and demanding. 1. Java trivial questions such as difference between an abstract class and an interface. How does Java do garbage collection? The interviewer constantly cuts me off to ask questions. Maybe I wasn't answering what he wanted, but this was jut plain rude. The connection was rather spotty too so I also couldn't hear his questions clearly. After I gave a high overview of my understanding and admitted I was not familiar with the specifics, he merely smirked and said to move on to the next question. 2. Talk about past experiences Both the technical recruiter and the interview bugged me about a past experience where I stayed on less than a year. I explained but they did not seem to be too satisfied with the answer but moved on quickly. They also tried to ask a lot of questions about my current project, in which some I had to say I am not able to disclose. 3. Coding questions Find me the sum of all value under a specific node in the tree. After asking some basic questions, I proceeded to walk through my algorithm before implementing, but the interviewer kept asking in a rude way, why are you assuming that this is xxx, this is wrong, you are not understanding my question correctly. To be fair, I was making some assumptions and all his questions are valid, but again the attitude was plain obnoxious. I was able to come up with the right solution, which we promptly got into how to scale the system to meet large requirements. Overall, I firmly believe one bad nut does not reflect the overall company. As mentioned before, they were really nice to me when I interviewed onsite 4 years ago. But regardless, due to this experience, I'm not even waiting to see whether I get an invite for onsite at this point and am going to reject them. To the interviewer if you read this, my feedback for you is to tone down the attitude. I can tell you are a brilliant engineer and am probably a fun person to work with once people get to know you, but this was not a very good first impression and can potentially drive away real talent from joining your team.

Interview Questions
  • Java trivial questions, tree search algorithm, scaling challenges

Interview

Some agency contacted me for an interview here. No info about what I'm applying for. Just randomly they scheduled an interview and started asking some BS question. This was for restaurants team, I feel really bad for people who work under this team and that Lead. He had a DESI mentality, DO NOT JOIN here. And who the hell on earth interviews on skype?

Interview Questions
  • Spark, Kafka, RestAPI, some problem with finding an error in the code.

Interview

Unengaged interviewer, no personal or experience questions jumped right into an algorithm computer science problem. Felt like a new grad interview from 2010. Didn't seem relevant to what the actual job would be (Java and React web development).

No feedback or whatsoever after the onsite. Completely waste of time. They seemed do interview to test the market and train interviewer. The office is mediocre nothing excited as well. Not recommended.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Tripadvisor (El Segundo, CA)

Interview

They have a normal interview process phone then onsite. Phone interview was pretty average the person had an instigator attitude not sign of friendliness and very harsh I did pretty well because I do usually well in the technical part. I made it to the onsite and that's when things took off to the next level. I met with 4 people. The hiring manager was a typical manager who loves to smile and BS and backstab you which is pretty common in the tech industry. The leads were the most awful part they were extermely manipulative and lazy. They were the kinds of leads we all know where instead of leading people they hire more junior people and suffocate them under themselves. The leads were american, they were all male as well so I didn't meet with any woman and I didn't see any woman even in the office. I was placed in a room where the guy next to me was shouting on the phone and the manager sais oh he is just loud as I was proposed to solve the questions which I did. They all had the worst personalities that I've seen throughout my career so culturally definitely its a very dark place where they hire you and put you in a corner and let you suffer as they are going up themselves and make more money and laugh behind your back and they think it's ok. Stay away from this place, they don't know what they are doing themselves and they don't even know how to evaluate their candidates. They put me through 6 hours of interviews and never even got back to me. It's a typical garbage company in tech so stay far and stay healthy. Hope this helps. Love and light!

Interview Questions
  • Lots of questions one was about iterator of a list where you implement next, and hasNext and the other two questions were pretty easy too. String parsing, Technical part is pretty straightforward as long as you have some basics covered and understood. I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Interview

The whole process is so disappointing, after I applied the recruiter told me to move to next step, but no one contacted me until I wrote to a few HRs to ask why. Finally they scheduled an interview, it is called by an recruiter and she sound really arrogant. She asked me normal questions like why do I want to find a new job. I got an reject letter next, seriously?! It's the first time I heard anybody got rejected just at the recruiter stage. I guess they don't really want to hire anyone, just a waste of time.

Interview

Beware of newbie interviewers! The interview was for office in Oxford, UK. The last interviewer was at his first interview (he told me that). The interview was about a database design. The interviewer was alone, and I didn't see him taking notes, like the previous ones. Database design is one of my strongest skills. He looked at my proposed designed as I was from Mars, or as he was an unprepared student who wanted to pass the exam. He did not understand anything from what I said. I came with a complete new approach, and it was clearly not the solution he had in his mind. I am wondering how this guy was hired as database professional when he doesn't know anything about it. At least this is what I read on his face. I was teaching for many years and I know how to read someone's face when he understands the subject or has no idea what is going on. The explanation could be understood even by a kindergarten student. I am happy I wasn't accepted, because I would't have liked to work with "professionals" who need weeks to understand subjects in the area they are supposed to be professionals.

Interview Questions
  • Not important, but when an interviewer asks you about a subject, he is supposed to be at least prepared, or if he is not, then asks another colleague to assist him. Or better decline to be the interviewer.

Interview

Very fast. Phone screen with recruiter, follow-up with manager and then an on-site. Recruiter worked with me prior to my on-site to make sure I was ready and was familiar with the company values - unlike a number of places I’ve worked TripAdvisor treats its values very seriously and uses them when evaluating candidates - something I’ve done now that I’ve interviewed people for TripAdvisor. Received an offer the day after the on-site. Speed wins.
