      Junior Data Analyst Interview

      Sep 4, 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      Declined offer
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Motivate LLC in Aug 2020

      Interview

One of the worst and unprofessional people I interviewed for. I applied somewhere near mid-june. I received the email from recruiter for initial phone screen after 10 days. I selected the time slot and thanked them for the opportunity. But on the very first interview no one showed up. No one called or emailed. I sat there waiting for the recruiter just in case if there was any emergency. But I was wrong. After waiting for more than 45 minutes I emailed the recruiter. After few hours I got the reply from recruiter that he simply missed the call and want to reschedule. I replied immediately with availability which he then rescheduled for after a week. Got the technical round with the team almost 2 weeks after that. It went well. But one of the managers started himself complaining about the company culture and how unhappy he is since it was acquired by the Lyft and he had to see his own employees living the company and joining Lyft. How he thinks it's unfair that Lyft is coming and taking the ownership of something they built. Another manager confirmed this scenario. He added more about how is planning to improve the culture and they are struggling to survive the bikeshare market. And how they just prefer someone coming in and supposed to their own job. After giving the interview I waited another 2 weeks to get results and finally got the final round with the head. It was the same progression of earlier interview. Same set of questions and nothing out the world. 2 weeks after the interview first time after 2 months I got the call from recruiter so prompt to set up the immediate phone call with the manager I was supposed to work with. just to do final check in. In the same call I was informed that I got the offer and immediately after the call the recruiter regarding the offer letter and what I was supposed to do. Recruiter was constantly pushing me to accept the offer soon before even reading it. When I raised my concern regarding the work which was expected out me which was far more than any junior person and at the same time the experience which I was bringing to the team. But apparently it did not set well with the team and HR. They got very upset that I am even bringing the negotiation part. The salary was never discussed even once with me during the span of 2-3 months which I spent in interviewing with them. They just presented the blind offer and was simply expecting me to accept it without discussing any non-salary benefits (signing bonus, vacation time, health benefits, any equity, terms of performance bonus there are simply none). In another which followed one hour of salary negotiation discussion I was told by same rude recruiter that team has decided to rescind my offer since team doesn't want to start on wrong foot. I said I am ok to accept the offer because I understand that due to covid it's been difficult for businesses to survive. Throughout my interviews I heard that I am their top pick. But I saw that the day after they presented the offer to me they had started to market the role again on LinkedIn and their website. Overall, it was such hectic and bitter experience. IF you have no plans on hiring someone you should not simply give them the offer and take it back just because they asked for negotiation. It is the very common thing to do in professional setting. But it certainly says a lot about Motivate's company culture and kind of setting one is getting into. If you do not like candidates questioning your business success they are worried about their own future in company too because they are investing their time and energy and ultimately life. No one likes to get hired after merely staring the role. I feel like I dodged the bullet.
