I applied in-person. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Merrill in Oct 2009
Interview
We held the interview off of premises over a cup of coffee. It felt informal as it was just a discussion but in retrospect, I see the value of why it was done this way. The manager wanted to make sure that you had the ability to build rapport, present yourself and a legit business plan, and close the sale (selling yourself). These are the skills you need to get off to a quick start in this business and it was the ideal forum for it. Some companies will make you take personality tests and screening tests to make sure you have the ability to pass the required licensing exams (series 7, 66, and state insurance licensing).

Question 1
The traditional methods of building a business are becoming harder to do because of national and internal compliance regulations. How will you differentiate yourself from the thousands of advisors who are as hungry as you are?
I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Merrill (New York, NY)
Interview
Got introduced to the head of the office (Market Executive) by former colleague who was a financial advisor in that location. The day of my interview I had three interviews. The first two with other advisors in the office who reported back to the head of the office their thoughts on me. By the time I met with the head of the office, it was less of an interview process and more "both advisors recommended you, congratulations, so my job now is to explain to you the particulars should you wish to accept this role." He did agree to my request to set up a one-on-one discussion with one of the most senior advisors in the office before I agreed to accept, and they were very accommodating on my start date.
