I applied online. I interviewed at GitLab in May 2017
Interview
Friendly and pleasant screening chat with one of the recruiters, if I remember correctly. In general, I felt the call was a little too short to convey important information across.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at GitLab in May 2024
Interview
After being referred by an employee, I landed a screening interview where I was asked about my background, motivations and even had some behavioural questions in the middle.
The overall experience was bad mainly because the interviewer didn't turn on the camera and I couldn't form any type of Empathy. As a 1st interview I believe it's super important to create some kind of relationship with the interviewer so that the interviewed can adapt the pitch. The feedback given was always the same after each question and it demonstrated lack of interest since the beginning from the interviewer.
If this interviewer is the "cover" of the company, I'd seriously consider applying somewhere else.

Interview
I was rather late to the process for this position so they informed me at the beginning of my interview that chances were slim. It was nice that the recruiter was super transparent throughout the interview about the process but also things like salary. The interview questions were rather hard and they were clearly looking for specific types of answers and skills. The employee handbook section around interview questions that they sent beforehand was really helpful in preparing.
