    Cashier/Barista Interview

    Anonymous Employee

    Neutral Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

The process took 6 days. I interviewed at Costa Coffee in March-2018.

    Interview

Talked to someone on JobToday app who owns a few costa coffees in the area, she passed my phone number on the the store manager of the store I picked. Manager called me and asked me to come in for the trial shift. Got to the trial shift, was told that to work here you have to have a lot of independence and initiative, so he just wanted to see what I would do. Got zero training on anything and was just expected to do stuff. I had to use the dishwasher (wasnt shown how to use it but had to figure it out myself) and I also got put on the till (they allowed me to handle cash and give out change, but they had no personal details about me and they didn’t train me on this which seemed very odd). I was told the shift would last 2 hours but it ran over by half an hour. I got a text half a week later offering me a job, even though I’d been given zero details about anything (had no idea what hours they wanted, what the pay was or anything). I reluctantly accepted the job purely because I need the money, even though I have been informed by the manager now that they pay minimum age as per your age (so 19 year olds get £5.60 an hour which is ridiculous)

    Interview Questions

    • Only asked whether I wanted full or part time and if I was okay with working in extremely stressful environments. They didnt care at all about anything about me, asked nothing about experience or general information. Barely talked to the manager on the shift at all.   Answer Question

    Cashier/Barista Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Waterlooville, England (UK)
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at Costa Coffee (Waterlooville, England (UK)).

    Interview

I applied online and got a phone call around 3 days later to invite me to an interview. I was greeted by (I believe) two managers. One of them was very polite and did most of the talking, the other was very rude. She questioned why I wasn't applying for jobs within the degree I had completed the year before and was very judgemental of my answer and the degree itself. By this point I felt as though I wasnt fit for the position however I was invited for a trial shift a few days later by the nicer of the managers who seemed happy with me overall.

The day I was given the trial shift was the busiest of the week (not that I minded). I worked for around 3 hours unpaid. Only half way through the shift one of the employees told me that someone had been hired for the position the day I was interviewed and didn't understand why I was there. After the trial had finished the manager did not speak to me and I was just escorted out by another member of staff.

I received a generic email the next day informing me I hadn't been successful with no reasoning or feedback.

    Barista Interview

    Anonymous Employee

    Positive Experience
    Easy Interview

    Application

The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Costa Coffee in November-2017.

    Interview

I was interviewed by the store manager, in the store. The interview was fairly relaxed. He first asked me about myself and my previous job, he then went on to ask 8 to 10 ‘tell me a time when’ questions and finished by asking around 6 scenario questions to see when your customer service would be like. Overall the interview only took about 15 minuets and at the end he arranged for me to come in to the store 2 days later for a 2 hour trial, I hear if I got the job or not today!

    Interview

Casual interview sat in shop amongst customers, easy questions on experience, and some others you would have to think about before eg. 3 words your best friend would describe you? Very casual just be happy and friendly, be honest about your experience, after interview you fill out forms general stuff allergies etc sign contract get uniform. obviously be presentable don't have to be overly formal no need for a pencil skirt or full on suit.. Manager has to run everything by the area manager as they do with everything to do with anything that goes on then they usually get back to you a day or so after

    Barista Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Hailsham, England (UK)
    No Offer
    Positive Experience
    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied in-person. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Costa Coffee (Hailsham, England (UK)) in October-2017.

    Interview

Handed my CV in directly. Nearly a week later they replied via Email that I'd get an interview and mini-trial shift.

So I wore my appropriate clothing, all of the important things to be prepared to ask and answer for the interview in mind, but it turned out to be a very informal interview. The manager simply asked me what my availability was. Aside from a couple of insignificant things, that was the extent of the interview. In a way it was a relief, but it was also disappointing as I didn't get to show off the answers I'd prepared for common interview questions.

Anyway, I was quickly shown to the cafe floor and one of the workers basically helped me for the shift which lasted about 45 minutes. Even as someone with (sadly) absolutely no work experience, I can say the shift was fairly straightforward. I was shown the basic draining and dishwasher usage, cleaning tables and collecting finished trays, and the main difficulty, interacting with customers and getting to grips with the cash register. It seemed to make sense, but I couldn't exactly pick it up straight away. The workers were very nice about it and didn't expect me to get a hang of it right away. And of course, I didn't do any drink preparation.

I did find it quite enjoyable I suppose. It was a good experience, but I don't think the manager took much of an opportunity to see if I was a good candidate. I'm sure she was watching my customer service but that was never going to impress her as I've never done it before. I'm sure that people with experience applied, so my chances of getting the job were slim. The manager replied via Email to tell me that I hadn't been successful in the same afternoon after the morning I had the trial. This was honestly a bit gutting as it was clear she didn't even have to think about it for long at all. It came down to my lack of experience, I'm sure. I'm a little bitter about it, but I have to say it was a "positive experience".

TL;DR: Very informal, quick and easy interview, it was all about the trial shift.
