I applied through university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at BNSF Railway in Oct 2014
Interview
I applied through a college recruiting event. BNSF is very proud that "they don't have to sell their company; it sells itself." The process for everything was pretty lengthy. You take an online test. If you pass that, they schedule a phone interview with you. If you do well with that, they invite you to Dallas to take part in panel interviews.
The interview process will take all day so be prepared. They will also take a hair sample that day; everyone does it so get to that as early as possible. I waited an hour with only 8 people in front of me. The interviewers are VERY difficult to read, so be prepared not to know how you did when the interview is over. They show no kind of emotion throughout the interview. I was very put off because they were an hour late for my scheduled interview time and no one even acknowledged that or apologized for the massive delay. I had to approach someone and ask what the hold up was; with no follow up on their end, so I was just left sitting there while other people were coming and going quickly.

They are very leadership based so be prepared for that.
Multi-stage interview and application process. If the company is interested you will take an aptitude test. After that, if you are considered to be competitive they will fly you to Ft. Worth for an informational and 1 on 1 interview session.

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at BNSF Railway (Fort Worth, TX) in Sep 2018
Interview
After an online application and a self recorded online interview through HireVue, I was invited to Fort Worth for an in person interview. BNSF payed for the entire trip and hotel however I was expected to cover any additional expenses. The Hiring event, as they call it, took place at a local Marriott hotel and consisted of presentations and then a panel interview.
